Chelsea enter talks to sign "generational" £45m Premier League star, he could be Palmer 2.0 -…

The summer transfer window has now been open for eight days, but Chelsea have been unusually quiet and are yet to complete a single deal ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.

Emanuel Emegha and Valentin Barco are both expected to arrive at Stamford Bridge from sister club Strasbourg after previous deals were agreed for their respective signatures.

However, Xabi Alonso is yet to identify any of his own additions in West London, but it’s expected that the Spaniard will want to add his own mark on the senior ranks ahead of his debut campaign.

After his appointment, it was confirmed that the 44-year-old will have control over additions after a frantic period of signings which led to Enzo Maresca’s departure.

It remains to be seen how much the new boss will have to spend during the ongoing window, but he’s already started to line up numerous potential transfer targets.

Chelsea enter talks to sign £45m star this summer

Over the last couple of days, Chelsea’s efforts within the transfer market have ramped up, and multiple moves for various players could take place in the weeks ahead.

Juventus left-back Andrea Cambiaso has been just one player to emerge on their shortlist, with the Italian just one of many talents who could depart the Serie A outfit this window.

A fee in the region of £45m has been mooted for the 26-year-old’s signature - which could see him be the perfect replacement for Marc Cucurella after his switch to Real Madrid.

Cambiaso isn’t the only player in the Blues’ sights for the current window, as Tottenham Hotspur star Lucas Bergvall has been named as the latest to be of interest to Alonso’s men.

According to TEAMtalk, Chelsea have already entered talks with the Swedish international’s representatives after he announced his intention to depart the Lilywhites this window.

The report states that the likes of Nottingham Forest, Aston Villa and Borussia Dortmund are all keen on the 20-year-old - potentially leading to a battle for his signature.

Any deal could prove to be an excellent piece of business for the Blues, with a fee in the region of £45m mooted to prise him away from Roberto De Zerbi’s men.

Why Bergvall would be the next Cole Palmer for Chelsea

Despite BlueCo’s erratic nature within the transfer market, they have still managed to secure some top-level talents - as seen with the £45m deal to sign Cole Palmer in the summer of 2023.

The Englishman arrived from fellow Premier League side Manchester City after failing to cement his place in the starting eleven - with their loss undoubtedly the Blues’ gain.

He’s since racked up 131 appearances and netted 54 goals and laid on 31 assists for his teammates - a tally no player has bettered at Stamford Bridge during the same period.

Palmer has undoubtedly developed into one of the best players in England’s top-flight and will no doubt play a huge role during Alonso’s tenure in West London.

The 24-year-old’s deal is evidence that excellent deals are to be had in the transfer market, something which also could be said about a deal for Bergvall this window.

The Swedish star would emulate Palmer in joining the Blues from a fellow big six club after ultimately failing to nail down a starting role despite having huge potential.

However, a move across the capital could also see the youngster reach the next level in his development - just as Palmer has done over recent seasons.

Bergvall’s stats from the most recent campaign in the Premier League are evidence that he’s already a superb talent and one who could take the club’s midfield department to the next level.

Within his 23 top-flight appearances in 2025/26, the 20-year-old registered four combined goals and assists - achieving a goal contribution every 241 minutes.

Such numbers highlight his tremendous quality within attacking areas of the pitch, resulting in Spurs’ head of recruitment labelling him as a “generational talent.”

Bergvall also managed to achieve a 63% dribble success rate in North London last term, subsequently ranking him in the top 6% of all players in the Premier League.

However, without the ball, he was just as impressive, making 2.1 tackles and 3.6 ball recoveries per 90 - which could make him the perfect box-to-box option in Alonso’s system.

Despite featuring in different positions, the similarities between Bergvall and Palmer before any move to Chelsea are evident, with the Blues now able to land yet another top-level young star.

£45m for a player of his experience and potential should be a no-brainer, but the hierarchy will have to fend off huge interest for his signature if they are to reach an agreement.

Should he get anywhere near the levels produced by the Englishman at the Bridge, it would be a deal that would be an absolute bargain and one that could push them closer to Premier League glory.
