Julian Alvarez’s future has been the subject of intense speculation all summer long, but the Argentine forward has now made his feelings crystal clear — and it changes everything.

The 26-year-old made the admission last night following Argentina’s comfortable 2-0 victory over Austria at the World Cup, telling ESPN that “a transfer is the best thing for everyone” and that he wants to “fulfil his dream”.

It’s being seen as a thinly veiled reference to his well-documented desire for a move to Barcelona:

“I spoke with people at the club, with those I had to speak with and the best thing for everyone is ‌a transfer and I want to fulfil my dream,”

“It’s not the time to talk about this, but I also can’t hide it. I try to be an honest person. It’s not known when it [my future] will be resolved,” he added as quoted by Sky Sports.

Liverpool’s interest in the Argentina striker is not thought to be active at this stage. But Fabrizio Romano confirmed that in the summer of 2024, Alvarez was on the club’s shortlist.

Behind the scenes, Liverpool even explored a high-stakes swap involving Luis Díaz in the summer of 2024, proposing that the Colombia winger head to the Etihad in exchange for Alvarez before he made the move to Atletico Madrid.

His agent, Fernando Hidalgo, has also mention the Anfield club plenty of times, likewise confirming the Reds’ interest that same summer, saying in March 2025:

“I confirm that Liverpool was interested in Julian last season,” he revealed.

However, the race for his signature appears to be a straight fight between Barcelona and Real Madrid. Los Blancos submitted a €150 million bid that Atletico rejected outright, with the club pointing Los Blancos toward Alvarez’s eye-watering €500 million release clause.

Barcelona also submitted a €100 million bid that was likewise rejected earlier this month.
