Boost for Man Utd as ‘world-class’ star edges closer to exit door with amidst ‘relentless’ pursuit

Manchester United could be set to collect significant capital gains, with Mason Greenwood potentially on the move this summer.

The 24-year-old was one of the most exciting young players to emerge from the club’s academy over the past decade, making his breakthrough between 2019 and 2020.

Sadly, the winger’s momentum was halted by serious legal charges in 2022 following allegations of domestic violence. He hasn’t played for Man Utd since that unsavoury episode.

After sitting on the sidelines for around 18 months, Greenwood revived his career with a successful loan spell at Getafe, before moving to Olympique Marseille in the summer of 2024 for circa £26 million.

The Englishman immediately established himself as a key player under Roberto De Zerbi, who described him as a ‘world-class’ player.

However, the French giants are coming off a complicated campaign. So following the departures of the Italian manager and other top officials, Greenwood is no longer happy in Southern France, and is now seeking a move away.

Champions League 8 3 1

Champions Trophy 1 1 0

The winger has been linked with several clubs, including Serie A giants Roma and Juventus. But according to Italian journalist Damiano Er Faina, Fenerbahce are making large strides on this front.

“Fenerbahçe were on a call with Marseille today regarding Mason Greenwood,” posted the transfer market expert on his X (formerly Twitter) account.

“The Turkish club is continuing to push relentlessly in the negotiations.”

Greenwood’s sale would be a timely boost for Man United

It is well known that Man Utd had negotiated a significant sell-on fee when they sold Greenwood to Marseille. It is believed to be between 40% and 50%.

Therefore, the Red Devils would collect a handsome profit should the 24-year-old complete a transfer, whether to Fenerbahce or any other club, for that matter. The Bradford native’s current value is estimated at £40 million or above.

With this comprehensive boost, Man Utd would have more room to manoeuvre on the transfer market, but it remains unclear if they’re willing to raise their offer for West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes, whose asking price is £80 million.

Some sources believe United already have the resources to match the price, but they would like to avoid inflating the market and reinvigorating the so-called ‘Man United tax’.
