Kaide Gordon is set to leave Liverpool on a permanent deal this summer, having seen injuries blight his progress after a sensational breakthrough five years ago.

Gordon joined Liverpool as a 16-year-old in February 2021 and months later he was already making inroads at first-team level.

But after four appearances in the 2021/22 campaign including a goal against Shrewsbury in the FA Cup, the winger struggled to kick on as injuries took their toll.

Now he is expected to depart the club on a permanent basis in the summer transfer window, with The Athletic reporting on his chances of a move.

It comes after a season spent with Liverpool U21s, though even then Gordon only played nine times – with four goals and three assists showing he is too advanced for academy football.

His campaign ended early in December after tearing his meniscus, which also ruled out any prospect of a January move.

No longer eligible as U21 as he turns 22 in October, the versatile attacker will seek a new venture in the coming months.

Midfielder Luca Stephenson is also set to move on, though Gordon’s situation is less clear-cut than with the 22-year-old, who is already in advanced talks over a £700,000 switch to Bolton.

Any interest in Gordon is likely to come from the Championship, while Liverpool may find themselves in a weaker position when it comes to negotiations for a fee.

He has, after all, only played eight times for the first team in five years since breaking through, along with 15 appearances over loan spells with Norwich and Portsmouth.

Though Liverpool’s senior setup has passed Gordon by – with the likes of Rio Ngumoha, Kieran Morrison, Will Wright and Josh Abe now emerging from the academy as first-team options – any exit this summer will be tinged with disappointment.

He quickly became a favourite among fans for his fearless attacking play and blistering pace, and the hope is that this can now translate to life at a new club.
