Arsenal supporters have been debating Ethan Nwaneri’s future on social media after former Gunners striker Alan Smith reportedly suggested the club should consider cashing in on the highly-rated teenager this summer.
Nwaneri remains one of the brightest prospects to emerge from Arsenal’s academy in recent years, but Smith’s comments have sparked a lively discussion among fans about whether the midfielder’s long-term future really lies in north London.
While many supporters remain firmly convinced that the attacker should be retained and developed, others believe a permanent transfer could be the best outcome if regular first-team football is unlikely.
One Arsenal fan wrote on X: “I love Ethan’s talent, but if Arsenal can’t guarantee him minutes, maybe now is the right time for everyone to move on.”
Another supporter posted: “There’s no point keeping young players just because they’re academy products. If a big offer arrives, I’d seriously consider it.”
Several fans pointed to Arsenal’s growing competition for places as a reason why Nwaneri could struggle to establish himself.
One social media user commented: “Look at the players ahead of him. If he wants to play every week, leaving permanently might actually be best for his career.”
Another wrote: “Great talent, but not every academy star becomes a first-team regular. Sometimes selling at the right time is smart business.”
Some supporters even suggested Arsenal could maximise his value while interest remains high.
One fan posted: “If there’s a £40m-£50m offer on the table, I think Arsenal have to think about it.”
Another added: “This might be the highest his value ever gets. Football can be ruthless, but clubs have to make difficult decisions.”
However, not all supporters agreed with Smith’s assessment.
Many fans argued that Arsenal would regret selling one of the most gifted young players in English football.
One supporter wrote: “Selling Nwaneri would be madness. We’d be talking about buying a player like him for £80m in a few years.”
Another posted: “We’ve spent years asking Arsenal to trust academy players. Why give up on him now?”
Others questioned whether enough patience is being shown with a player still in the early stages of his development.
One fan commented: “People forget how young he is. Not everyone develops at the same speed.”
Another wrote: “The club should be finding ways to integrate him, not discussing exits.”
As debate continues, the reaction among Arsenal supporters appears deeply divided. While many remain determined to see Nwaneri succeed at the Emirates, a growing section of the fanbase believes that if opportunities remain limited, this summer could represent the right moment for player and club to part ways permanently
