Arsenal might have thought they’d cast Manchester City into the darkness after they downed them in the Premier League title race. However, just a couple of weeks later, their rivals remain an influence for the Gunners and, it seems, many other clubs this transfer window.

It is shaping up to be one of the most expensive windows ever, with the potential to break club records for single deals, total spend, and the window’s overall expenditure. Arsenal want to build on their title success and sign several players to improve the quality in order to defend their trophy successfully for the first time since the 1930s.

City’s marquee move of the summer centres around Elliot Anderson of Nottingham Forest. Talks are ongoing on a move which could see the second-place finishers pay the asking price of £120million.

Newcastle United have no sell-on clause to benefit from having sold the then 21-year-old under pressure from financial fair play rules for £35million. After just two seasons, that figure looks set to more than triple.

As a result, clubs like Crystal Palace in regard to Adam Wharton, Newcastle with regard to Sandro Tonali and West Ham with Matheus Fernandes are all asking for humungous fees for players whose market value is realistically lower.

The same can be said for Aston Villa and Morgan Rogers. Rogers is Arsenal’s primary transfer target this summer, looked upon as a player to level up their left-hand side.

It would be completely fair of Villa to point to Anderson’s potential price tag and suggest any figure below £100million would not reflect the market for English top talent. The question remains whether Arsenal are willing to pay it.

Financially, Arsenal are in a much healthier position than Villa, with expectations that the West Midlands club will not sell during the window. Rogers is their most expensive asset, but still, any sale will test Arsenal’s resolve.
