Manchester United have withdrawn from both the EFL Trophy and National League Cup in a bid to ease the load on their academy players. After United's first-team qualified for the 2026-27 season Champions League, the under-19 side will also return to the UEFA Youth League.
However, concerns soon developed that the fixture list for their Professional Development Phase (PDP) group was becoming overstretched. United's youngsters were set to compete in Premier League 2, the UEFA Youth League, Premier League International Cup, EFL Trophy and National League Cup, alongside the U18 Premier League and FA Youth Cup.
After holding internal discussions, it was decided that United would withdraw from the EFL Trophy and National League Cup. While the Red Devils have competed in the EFL Trophy since 2019, they played in the National League Cup for the first time last season.
As reported by the Manchester Evening News, the decision to pull out of the EFL Trophy while continuing in the Premier League International Cup was driven by the variety of opposition which the latter tournament provides, with matches against academy teams from across the globe offering different playing styles.
Officials believed that last season's fixture against Real Madrid at Old Trafford provided an excellent examination for the club's emerging talent. The move to reduce the fixture list next term comes as United anticipate having a smaller under-21 squad this season.
While they'll continue to sign the most promising young talent, sources indicate that United will be more discerning about recruitment.

The emphasis will also shift towards individual development, creating more scope for training ground work and greater chances for the most talented youngsters to train with the first-team, rather than staying with the under-21s throughout a packed fixture schedule.
Old Trafford insiders said that United remain committed to both tournaments they have withdrawn from and that their young players gained valuable experience from each. They plan to reassess the games programme before the 2027-28 campaign and may opt to re-join both competitions.
