Liverpool are one of three Premier League clubs who have “inquired” about the availability of Borussia Dortmund midfielder Felix Nmecha, according to reports in the German media.

Sport Bild claim that the Reds, Manchester United and Manchester City have all made an initial approach for the German international.

Nmecha has caught the eye whilst playing for his country at the World Cup, and it has prompted speculation about his future.

Dortmund are not in a position where they need to sell the player this summer, and it is believed they could well hold out for a fee in the region of €100m (£86m). He does have a release clause worth €80m (£69m), but that only comes into effect next year.

Nmecha’s “homegrown” status makes him an attractive target

Premier League rules stipulate that clubs must have at least eight “homegrown” players in their 25-man squad.

A player from any country qualifies as homegrown if he has spent three years at an English team under the age of 21, which is a criterion that Nmecha meetss after spending several years in Man City’s academy. The German left the Etihad on a free transfer for Wolfsburg in the summer of 2021.

SportBild claim that Premier League clubs are particularly keen on Nmecha because of his homegrown status.

Liverpool are in the market for a midfielder

Journalist Fabrizio Romano revealed at the weekend that the Merseyside club made an enquiry for West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes. That demonstrates that sporting director Richard Hughes is looking to reinforce the middle of the park.

In addition to Fernandes and Nmecha, the likes of Brighton’s Yasin Ayari and Juventus’s Khephren Thuram have also been mentioned as possible targets recently.
