John Terry believes that no one was more qualified than him to take the interim Chelsea job following the sacking of Liam Rosenior. The Blues dismissed the 41-year-old after just three-and-a-half months in charge and chose to make Calum McFarlane their temporary boss for the second time during the 2025/26 season.
Following the dismissal of Enzo Maresca, Chelsea's under-18s manager was brought in for just two games before Rosenior took over permanently.
McFarlane took charge of Chelsea for six matches at the end of the season, which included an FA Cup final, with Terry sharing his verdict on the situation, via Piers Morgan Uncensored.
In response to Morgan stating that Terry being overlooked for the short-term role was ‘borderline offensive’, he said: “Now Piers, you’re 100% spot on. I've never thought that I could be Chelsea manager.

"But when a manager leaves the football club and Chelsea are looking for an interim manager, there was no one in the building, the academy building or the first team building, that was more qualified than me in terms of their qualifications.
“More importantly, and above all of that, whether it was for one game or two games, there was no one more Chelsea than me. And again, touching on the supporters, giving the supporters what they wanted at that time.
“Now, did I think that I deserve the Chelsea manager job long-term? Absolutely not. Because Chelsea is way bigger than me. If I want to go into that, I need to go on my journey to then get the Chelsea job.”
Terry has previously bemoaned a lack of opportunities to further his coaching journey having only worked at Aston Villa as assistant coach and a part‑time mentor in the Chelsea academy. Though Terry has ruled himself out of taking the job on a full-time basis any time soon, he could be considered by those in west London later down the line.

The hope will be that he is not required however, with Xabi Alonso handed a four-year contract as Chelsea head coach in mid-May.
He is set to face a number of transfer decisions over the next few months with the future of Enzo Fernandez firmly up for debate. The Argentine could be following Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid if his lofty asking price is met.

Trevoh Chalobah is the latest player linked to an exit with Serie A side Como eyeing an ambitious deal as they prepare for Champions League football. Though Chelsea are not in Europe for next season, additions across the pitch will almost certainly be targeted.
Aston Villa's Morgan Rogers is a serious option but looks more likely to join Arsenal instead. Young stars Ethan Nwaneri and Lucas Bergvall have been linked but are not being actively pursued by Chelsea.
