Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been out of management since his departure from Besiktas in August 2025.

The Manchester United legend, who managed the club between 2018 and 2021, has not managed in the Premier League since his time at Old Trafford.

Solskjaer’s record with Manchester United in the Premier League was good as a player, with him winning six league titles, and as a manager, he has a win rate of 44.9% having won 57 games across his 127 games managed, spanning his spell at Old Trafford and at Cardiff City.

He has now missed out on a return to the English top flight, however, with Ipswich Town officially hiring Gary O’Neil on a three-year deal to replace Kieran McKenna, as they announced on their website.

McKenna, who had been at Manchester United as a assistant manager previously, announced his departure from Ipswich earlier this month after guiding the club to automatic promotion last season.

A statement on the Ipswich Town website, which confirmed the announcement of the former Wolves boss, states, “Ipswich Town Football Club is delighted to confirm the appointment of Gary O’Neil as Manager.

“The 43-year-old, who is the 20th manager in the Blues’ 90-year professional history, arrives at Portman Road from French side Strasbourg, signing a three-year deal to the summer of 2029.”

“It is an honour to be appointed Manager of this great football club,” O’Neil said.

“I have followed the progress the club has made over the last few years closely and to now have the opportunity to lead Ipswich Town in the Premier League is something I am hugely excited by.”

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was one of the leading contenders for the managerial post although the Tractor Boys ultimately decided to go with O’Neil instead.

For the former Manchester United manager, this decision may come as a disappointment although could be a signal that he is still attractive in the list of managers currently available.
