How the NFL’s supplemental draft decision impacts Brendan Sorsby

Former Cincinnati quarterback Brendan Sorsby's path to the NFL just got a major update. Sorsby intended to enter the NFL Supplemental Draft later this summer. But one surprising decision by the NFL has scuttled Sorsby's plans and leave the future for the controversial quarterback quite uncertain.

The NFL is declining to hold a supplemental draft this summer, per ESPN's Adam Schefter. Based on the league's current CBA, the NFL gets to decide whether or not to hold a supplemental draft each season.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport added that Sorsby cannot be signed as a free agent during the 2026 season. He is able to play in other professional leagues, but not the NFL. A return to college football does not look like it is in the cards, either.

As a result, the only way that Sorsby can enter the league is by declaring for the 2027 NFL Draft, which will take place in the spring of 2027.

The league sent a letter to Sorsby and all 32 teams to inform them of the decision. One section at the end of the letter directly addressed Sorsby, encouraging him to enter the draft next spring.

“As Commissioner Goodell has emphasized, participation in the NFL is a privilege that carries with it significant responsibilities, including accountability,” the letter concluded. “By all accounts, you are a talented player with the potential for future success. We encourage you to focus on preparing for possible entry into the NFL through the 2027 NFL Annual Draft.”

The league has taken a firm stance on players with gambling allegations in the past. They stuck to the same playbook here, seemingly cancelling an entire league event to send a message.

It will be fascinating to see how Sorsby responds to this surprising announcement from the league.
