Cowboys CB Shavon Revel Makes Bold Declaration About Being Best Cornerback in the NFL

Not many cornerbacks who ranked last among qualified players in PFF grade enter the next offseason boldly declaring themselves a future No. 1. Dallas Cowboys cornerback Shavon Revel Jr. did exactly that this week at mandatory minicamp, and there is a specific reason his confidence is drawing attention rather than eye rolls.

Revel was selected in the third round (No. 76 overall) out of East Carolina in the 2025 NFL Draft, but he was far from healthy. He tore his left ACL during his senior season at East Carolina, causing him to fall from a projected first-round grade. He missed the entire offseason program and the first 10 games of his rookie season. He debuted in Week 11 wearing a knee brace and played the final seven games of the season, recording a 35.2 overall defensive PFF grade – lowest among 114 qualified cornerbacks.

This week at Cowboys minicamp, Revel made it clear he is not letting last season define him. “I am going to be, someday, the best cornerback in the league,”Revel said. “That’s just how I look at it, and I have the confidence to say it. At the end of the day, I got to work.”

Revel opened up about how last season felt physically. He confirmed his knee did not feel truly recovered until this spring’s OTAs. “I did not feel like myself,” Revel said. “I just had that heart and grit to go out there.” He added his father taught him to block out outside opinion. “One thing about me, I’m going to ignore the noise,” he said.

Backing up that bold claim will be much harder than stating it. DaRon Bland is locked into one boundary spot. Cobie Durant, signed from the Rams on a deal worth up to $5.5 million, has the inside track at the other starting role. Fourth-round rookie Devin Moore and safety Caleb Downs, who can slide to corner, add more competition. Revel is expected to compete for snaps in a crowded CB room heading into training camp.

How the Cowboys’ New Defensive System Helps Shavon Revel

The Cowboys hired Christian Parker as defensive coordinator this offseason. Parker is a former defensive backs coach known for developing cornerbacks. Parker is already expected to work closely with Revel alongside Durant and Bland in a secondary that ranked among the league’s worst in coverage metrics last season. Under Parker’s scheme, corners with Revel’s size – 6-foot-2, around 200 pounds – typically see more press assignments, which is where his ECU tape was most impressive.

Before the ACL, Revel was tracking as a potential first-round player. In three games at East Carolina in 2024, he recorded two interceptions, one pick-six, and two pass deflections – holding opponents to a 48.8 passer rating on 21 targets. Lance Zierlein of NFL.comprojected him as a future plus starter before the injury, a ceiling that no one has revised downward based purely on what they saw in seven damaged NFL games.

Revel’s path to significant playing time in 2026 is narrow but realistic. Durant is on a one-year deal, which means there is no long-term commitment blocking the lane. Bland’s foot required a second surgery in 2025, so his health going into training camp is not guaranteed. Revel said he does not want to overthink his approach, quoting him: “My main goal is to obviously be the best player I can be and the best teammate I can be.”

Revel is entering Year 2 in the best physical condition of his NFL career. The claim about becoming the league’s best is long-term. The competition for a starting job in Dallas starts at training camp.
