In honor of the San Francisco 49ers celebrating their 80th anniversary, Sactown Sports is kicking off a countdown of the 80 greatest moments in the franchise’s illustrious history in reverse order called “Faithful Flashbacks.”
From Super Bowl-winning plays to overperforming teams that had minimal expectations, there’s plenty to choose from the team with five titles under its belt.
The voting was conducted by a handful of the Sactown Sports’ staffers before results were compiled into a full list that will count down to the 49ers’ 2026 NFL regular season debut against the Rams in Melbourne, Australia, on September 10th.

Faithful Flashbacks -- San Francisco 49ers 80 Best Moments
Coming in at No. 55 on our ‘Faithful Flashbacks’ countdown of the 80 best moments in franchise history is the major merger that brought the 49ers into the NFL.
Before they became one of the NFL’s signature franchises, the 49ers were part of the All-America Football Conference. San Francisco had been a member of the AAFC, beginning play in 1946 and establishing themselves as one of the league’s stronger teams.
The 49ers were not an afterthought in that league. Behind key early figures like Tony Morabito, Buck Shaw, Frankie Albert and Joe Perry, they gave professional football a real foothold on the West Coast and helped build the foundation of the franchise’s identity.
After competing with the NFL for players, and attention, the AAFC collapsed following the 1949 season. As part of the merger agreement, three teams were absorbed into the NFL: the Cleveland Browns, Baltimore Colts and San Francisco 49ers.

Joining the NFL gave San Francisco long-term stability and placed the franchise on a much larger stage. Their time in the AFC allowed the 49ers to have a prebuilt a fan base, a roster and a professional football presence that was strong enough to carry into the sport’s top league.
Their first NFL season was not a major success on the field, but that eventually a larger breakthrough came through. The 49ers were now part of the league where their greatest history would eventually be made.
Everything later from Kezar Stadium to Candlestick Park and the first playoff runs to the five Super Bowl championships, began back at that moment.
The 49ers had officially joined the NFL, setting the franchise on the path toward becoming one of the most recognizable organizations in football.
