Mike Love, one of the founding members of the Beach Boys, is selling his longtime Tahoe home for $43 million. This is no ordinary Tahoe mansion. It’s a massive compound and spiritual oasis that inspired a member of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame for more than four decades, complete with mystical elements and musical flourishes.
The nearly 20,000-square-foot mansion is located in Incline Village. But the address is not on Incline’s famously glitzy Lakeshore Boulevard, where throngs of people drive by daily. When Love came home from his international tours, he sought privacy and quiet and inspiration, so he chose a 2.5-acre oasis high up on the mountainside, far away from the crowds. It’s not a lakefront; instead, it’s above the lake, with a longer, wider, more impressive view of sky and water.

“There are views from every window, whether you’re seeing Diamond Peak or you’re seeing Lake Tahoe,” said Jeannette Harpole, a real estate agent with Keller Williams who listed the property. “It’s majestic out there, and it’s protected.”
To guarantee his privacy, Love also put 6 acres surrounding his property into conservation, so “nobody can build around you, forever,” Harpole said.

Love started the Beach Boys in Southern California with his cousins Brian, Dennis and Carl Wilson and friend Al Jardine. He has spent his life traveling across the globe with the band. But when he’s not performing in front of thousands, Love and his wife Jacquelyne call Lake Tahoe home.

The entrance to the home is marked with a hand-carved door made of solid wood that’s 10 inches thick. Rubies, diamonds and pearls are set into the wood, which features a carving of Ganesh, a Hindu god. The door was blessed by a temple priest.
Inside, a koi pond anchors a wrought-iron spiral staircase that wraps upward, toward a hand-painted celestial dome with stars painting into a dark sky. The entire home is heated with radiant floors, so residents can walk around without shoes.

The main level is centered around a great room with floor-to-ceiling glass windows and retractable doors that open to a terrace with a wide-open view of Lake Tahoe. A two-story fireplace is made with river rock. A grand piano and a harp are reminders of how much music was made inside these walls.

There are 10 bedrooms and 15 bathrooms. The main suite is located in its own wing of the estate, with a stone fireplace and a private deck that opens up to a view of Lake Tahoe. It has dual baths: One is built with stone and incorporates hot steam, the other is a soaking tub with a sun deck and private coffee bar.
In addition to the primary suite, eight bedrooms are en suite and have different themes, Harpole said. One celebrates Lake Tahoe. Another honors Native American culture. Most of the bedrooms have their own private balconies.

Of course, this being the primary residence of a member of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, the home includes a recording studio with pitched ceilings designed for the best acoustics, a wet bar and a loft with skylights.

But there is also much more: a professional chef’s kitchen, a private movie theater, a poker room, arcade, wine cellar and tasting room, a gym, a boardroom and a cedar sauna and a steam room. There are two elevators. Curved glass accentuates the meditation room, and an herb garden is a homey touch in the kitchen, Harpole said.

Crystal chandeliers hover above a formal dining room with seating for 14 people. The home, however, can accommodate up to 50 people for larger gatherings.
Jacquelyne had a key role in designing the home. She was “meticulous,” Harpole said.
“Every single detail of that property was made with love and caring,” Harpole said.

Love even built his own private ice skating rink, complete with ice skates in every single shoe size, Harpole said.
“Because he tours all the time, when they got there, they didn’t want to have to go anywhere,” she said.

The Loves have owned this property for more than 40 years. It has been their primary residence, where they raised eight children, Harpole said. They have been active residents in the Incline Village community: They were co-founders of the Lake Tahoe School, a private school in Incline Village, and have supported many local institutions and organizations, including the Incline Village Community Hospital.

When he did need to take off for touring, Love picked a spot that was still an easy drive to Reno. From his home in Incline, he only had to drive a little over 30 minutes to get to the airport, Harpole said. That makes this property ideal for someone who needs accessibility and ease of access but still craves privacy. Just like a rock star.
“They wanted to feel like they were on the water, but in their own private oasis, and that’s what they created,” she said.
