The Milwaukee Bucks got absolutely fleeced in their deal with the Miami Heat that sent Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis to South Beach in exchange for Tyler Herro, three bench players and five draft picks.
From the outside looking in, it appears as though someone who doesn't know too much about basketball had a lot of influence on the deal. As it turns out, sources are telling [Kevin O'Connor of Yahoo Sports](https://x.com/KevinOConnor/status/2069276414998700139?s=20) that that is exactly the case.
"Sources say Bucks owner Jimmy Haslam was a driving force in taking the Heat deal for Giannis over Boston’s offer," O'Connor wrote. "Haslam didn’t want to risk Jaylen Brown wanting out of Milwaukee in a year after dealing with Giannis and Myles Garrett trade demands. Haslam wanted certainty, and the Miami deal provided more of that with more total assets in return to Milwaukee."
It is understandable why an owner, whose intentions are often questioned, would see a trade haul consisting of young (cheap) players and draft capital as more enticing than trading superstars with a conference rival.
As O'Connor mentioned, Bucks owner Jimmy Haslam also owns the Cleveland Browns.
Not even one month ago, Haslam's Browns traded away the best player in the NFL, Myles Garrett, and his $200 million contract.
Not making any assumptions here. But the Bucks are not a better basketball team today than they were before the trade was made. Perhaps this helps explain how the 2021 NBA Champions let that happen.
