Tottenham Hotspur youngster Lucas Bergvall has notified his interest to leave the club in this summer. The London club is having difficulty keeping one of their most talented prospects in the club. Bergvall is currently representing Sweden in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Swedish midfielder has found himself at the bottom of pecking order under Spurs’ current coach Roberto De Zerbi and so he wishes to leave.

Lucas Bergvall plans for a summer exit from Tottenham

As reported by The Athletic, the Sweden international has communicated his desire to leave Spurs this summer to the Tottenham board. He wants to continue his football career somewhere else and he believes that it will be best for his future. Many Premier League clubs and other European clubs are observing Bergvall’s situation who want to take the youngster away from Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Previously in the winter transfer window, many clubs were interested in the 20-year-old midfielder. All of his suitors were speculating his situation in North London. Tottenham will have to put up a fight with other clubs to keep hold of him at the club. As reported by Global Football Player Agencies, they had already rejected Premier League clubs like Aston Villa and Chelsea in winter when they approached to learn his situation.

Lucas Bergvall’s trajectory from being the best to being benched

As reported by Goal, the Swedish talent’s path at Tottenham consists of several ups and downs. Bergvall joined Spurs from Swedish club Djurgarden in July 2024 for €20m, according to Transfermarkt. After joining the north London club, he delivered some brilliant performances.

He even became a key player in Ange Postecoglou’s setup. The youngster played the most crucial role in Spurs’ midfield and helped them to win the UEFA Europa League against Manchester United in 2025. Tottenham broke their 17 years trophy drought last year. His marvelous performances throughout the season helped him to win the club’s Player of the Year award. This achievement signified that he would lay the foundations of the club’s better future.

But things did not go as planned. A managerial change occurred at the club at the end of the last season. The Lilywhites brought Roberto De Zerbi as their manager after sacking Igor Tudor. Before Tudor, Thomas Frank was the manager who used the Swedish midfielder on the wings and not as a central midfielder. This playstyle was maintained by Tudor as well which limited Bergvall’s abilities.

Now under De Zerbi, things are not looking well. The Italian coach uses 4-2-3-1 as his preferred football formation. This playstyle is not well suited to Bergvall’s profile. Therefore, he played very rarely at the season end under the former Marseille manager.

Spurs’ league rivals are looking for the midfielder

Bergvall’s ambiguity regarding his position in the starting eleven has alerted other Premier League clubs. Earlier this year, Chelsea and Aston Villa had tried to understand his situation. However, Spurs rejected their approach.

As reported by London Evening Standard, Chelsea are not anymore interested in the Swedish midfielder. The Blues will not place any offer for Bergvall in the summer window. But that is not the end of his demand in the market.

As reported by Yahoo Sports, Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa are interested in the 20-year-old. Forest view him as the replacement of Elliot Anderson in case the English midfielder leaves. But Villa is not actively looking for a midfielder.
