Manchester United figures were once again at the heart of Portugal’s latest World Cup display as Bruno Fernandes and Cristiano Ronaldo both played key roles in a dominant 5-0 win over Uzbekistan.
The result came after a poor start to the tournament, with Portugal previously held to a 1-1 draw in their opening fixture against the DR Congo.
Concerns had briefly emerged over cohesion within the squad.
However, the latest performance marked a clear response, with both attacking leaders stepping up when it mattered most.
Portugal’s victory was defined by a clinical display and major individual moments from their experienced stars.
Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice in Portugal’s emphatic win over Uzbekistan, while Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes played the full 90 minutes and delivered an influential midfield performance.
The Manchester United midfielder was heavily involved in shaping the rhythm of the match, helping Portugal control possession and create sustained pressure throughout.
Cristiano Ronaldo, meanwhile, produced a decisive response after criticism following the opening match, emphasising his continued importance on the international stage.
Portuguese media react to Cristiano Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes performances
Portuguese media delivered strong assessments of both players, with CNN Portugal awarding Bruno Fernandes an 8/10 rating for his performance.
They said, “Bruno Fernandes entered the game with a mission: three points at any cost. Just as has been happening at Man United and happened in another life at Alvalade, the now eternal number 8 rose to the occasion in the face of the storm.
“The midfielder entered the field very well, was one of the most dissatisfied with the siege from the initial whistle and ended up galvanizing the victory that Portugal so desperately needed.
“In the 39th minute, it was from Bruno Fernandes’ feet that the pinpoint pass came for Cristiano Ronaldo’s run, culminating in the 3-0 and CR7’s second goal.
“The number 8 also had an influence on the fourth Portuguese goal by taking the corner on the right that ended up becoming an own goal by Nematov, after much confusion near the near post.”
Ronaldo was also given a 9/10, with CNN Portugal producing an emotional assessment of his performance, stating, “They said it was time to make way for the younger generation, that the pace wasn’t the same anymore, that leaping beyond what seemed physically possible was no longer feasible, but it seems that this Tuesday morning was foggy and Cristiano Ronaldo returned from Arabia.
“In our notes on the game against the Democratic Republic of Congo, we theorized whether, after King Sebastian, the Portuguese people would eternally wait for someone else who would never return.
“CR7 is back – he himself guarantees it ! This may very well be the seventh life of the national star, so here’s a piece of advice: enjoy every moment because this era will not be repeated.”
A Bola also highlighted Ronaldo’s influence, writing, “Cristiano continues to pinpoint central defenders, continues to disrupt defensive lines, continues to force opponents to look at the penalty area differently, and continues to be an emotional and competitive reference point for his teammates.”
Ronaldo’s brace not only secured a statement win but also carried historic significance, as he became the first player in history, male or female, to score in six different World Cup tournaments.
The goals also took his World Cup tally to 10, moving him ahead of Portugal legend Eusebio as the nation’s all-time leading scorer in the competition.
After a slow start to the tournament, the Manchester United and Real Madrid icon responded in trademark fashion, delivering another defining night on the global stage.
