Barcelona supporters turn on Anthony Gordon as Newcastle United seal £78m masterstroke

Anthony Gordon is under pressure after another lacklustre performance at the World Cup.

He has his dream move, Thomas Tuchel started him on the biggest stage of all but, as Newcastle United supporters witnessed throughout last season, the winger failed to make an impact. Toon fans rang the alarm bells on Gordon - who has scored just three open-play goals in the Premier League since January 2025.

It was a surprise to everybody that Bayern Munich and Barcelona ignored the warnings to emerge as the two clubs jostling for Gordon’s signature. He completed an initial £70million move to the Camp Nou last month - and good luck to him - but Blagrauna chiefs might be scratching their heads after England drew to Ghana last night.

Anthony Gordon vs Ghana

Gordon was hooked on 65 minutes after having little impact on a resolute Ghanaian backline. While his pressing was undeniable, the 25-year-old struggled to test Caleb Yirenkyi at full-back.

He also failed to supply any ammunition to Harry Kane, who appeared isolated up front. Ultimately, Gordon is now the one likely to face the chop when England face Panama this weekend.

Marcus Rashford - who Gordon replaced at Barca - scored in the 4-2 win over Croatia last week. Three Lions fans are now calling for the forward to be given a chance after only playing seven minutes against Ghana.

Gary Neville on Anthony Gordon

Manchester United legend Gary Neville believes Gordon is under the “most pressure” as the inquest begins on England’s goalless draw. He told The Overlap: "Anthony Gordon, he's probably the one that's under the most pressure now and we all thought he probably wouldn't play today, didn't we?

“I think he's under pressure now. He's the one who is going to find it a little bit difficult to keep his spot."

Spanish media criticism

Sections of the Spanish press also questioned Gordon following his anonymous performance in Boston. ABC called his display “tame”, with the wideman lacking the “finesse” to break down a sturdy defence.

AS described Gordon as “lacklustre” - a fitting adjective for his 2025-26 campaign overall. Thomas Tuchel now has a big call to make on both flanks as Bukayo Saka also had a more incisive impact than Noni Madueke.

Barcelona fans react

Barcelona fans were far from impressed after watching Gordon fail to impress. One supporter called the transfer fee - which could rise to £78million - a “complete waste”.

Just got subbed off. Played absolutely atrocious. A complete waste of 80 M that could have been spent better on addressing more gaping holes in the squad. Another terrible UCL campaign loading for Barca next season.

Another joked that he wishes his club kept the receipt as the former Toon winger struggled on the big stage. The overwhelming consensus towards Gordon across various Barca social media channels was negative.
