Liverpool will reportedly consider allowing Cody Gakpo to leave the club if a “big offer” is submitted for him in the summer transfer window.
The 27-year-old had such a disappointing 2025/26 season for the Reds, struggling to fire on the left wing, and it has led to doubts over his future, amid rumours of a move to Tottenham.
Gakpo is showing what a potent attacking player he can be at the 2026 World Cup, however, bagging two goals and one assist in the opening couple of matches.
It remains to be seen how highly Andoni Iraola rates the Netherlands international, but Football Insider claim that a “big offer” could well be accepted if it arrives this summer.
That said, it is stressed that the Reds are not “actively” looking to sell the Dutchman ahead of next season, with his performances at the World Cup showing that he can still be an effective squad player.
Meanwhile, the report also states that Iraola is “keen to give Gakpo the chance to shine next term”, suggesting that he could be more likely to stay than leave.
Would Liverpool be better with or without Cody Gakpo?
There is a middle ground with Gakpo, with the winger not good enough to be a definite starter every week, highlighting the need for an elite left-sided attacker to come in.
He is still an international footballer who has done plenty of good for Liverpool, though, with Alan Shearer calling him a “golden boy” for his country and ex-Reds striker Daniel Sturridge recently saying:
“Gakpo is different for Netherlands man! Way more confident and decisive with his decisions, dribbling and shot selection. Bagged 2 and an assist tonight . Love to see it.”
Ultimately, if a huge bid does come Gakpo’s way, Liverpool should accept it, but the positives outweigh the negatives when it comes to him staying, having scored 50 goals and registered 23 assists in 180 appearances for the Reds.
He could be a strong impact substitute, using his pace and directness up against tiring legs, but someone in the mould of Bradley Barcola is needed as an upgrade before next season gets up and running.
