Southampton Set To Pocket Chunk Of Mateus Fernandes Sale

Mateus Fernandes was only at St Mary's for a season, but it seems like it will be a very profitable one for Saints, as Manchester United seem set to battle it out with Tottenham Hotspur for his signature after West Ham's relegation.

The 21 year old Portugese midfielder signed for Southampton for around £13 million in the summer of 2024, a sizable amount for a player who had only just turned 20 and had just 33 Portugese top flight games to his name.

The Southampton leap of faith paid dividends though, although they were relegated, Fernandes was their best player and they made a profit of around £29 million when they sold him to West Ham.

But Fernandes along with team mate Kyle Walker-Peters who also joined the Hammers would suffer a second consecutive relegation from the Premier League and now he looks set to make a move for the 3rd summer running.

Manchester United are said to be close to agreeing terms with the player, but they face competition from Spurs, so it looks like it will be a shoot out for his signature and that can only be of benefit to Saints.

As part of the transfer deal that saw Fernandes swap St Mary's for the London Stadium, Saints are said to have a 15% or 20% share of any profit made on that transfer by West Ham.

That means if they sell him for £60 million, it would be a £18 million profit for the Hammers & 15% of that would be £2.7 million windfall, if it was 20% then that sum would increase to £3.6 million.

However if the arrival of Spurs to the party opens up a bidding war then that could increase substantially £70 million transfer fee would mean £4.2 million at 15% & £5.6 million at 20%

With Saints seeing a drop in revenue as the Premier League parachute payments drop, it could not come at a better time.

Various media reports suggest that Fernandes is open to moving to either Manchester United or Tottenham Hotspur and the final decision will be whichever club agrees the best deal with West Ham.
