Spanish Claim: Liverpool “try to sign” Real Madrid left-back loved by Iraola

Liverpool are reportedly ‘trying to sign’ Real Madrid‘s left-back, Fran Garcia, who has already played 122 games for Andoni Iraola.

With Andy Robertson out of the picture, the path is clear for Milos Kerkez to become Liverpool’s undisputed first-choice left-back under the coach for whom he made his name at Bournemouth, Iraola.

Another left-back massively helped by Iraola has been Garcia, whose three years at Rayo Vallecano directly coincided with the coach’s time there.

Although Kostas Tsimikas is returning from his loan at Roma to play backup to Kerkez, Liverpool are now being linked with a move for Madrid’s 26-year-old full-back, Garcia.

Speaking to The Redmen TV, Spanish football journalist Angel Garcia claimed: “The people I spoke to were pretty sure that Andoni Iraola is going to try to sign Fran Garcia.”

Having come through the Madrid youth system, the Spaniard became a key player for Rayo Vallecano from 2020 to 2023 before returning to Los Blancos.

However, he has fallen out of favour of late, starting just 10 matches in La Liga this season.

As a result, Garcia thinks Madrid could demand from £5 million to £8m for a transfer, though Liverpool would face competition if they were to move for him.

The reporter explained: “Garcia is going to leave Real Madrid this year. I was reading in many Spanish sports magazines that Jose Mourinho does not want Fran Garcia in his team this year.

“There are many teams really interested in signing him in Spain — like Betis — and even in Italy.

“If Real Madrid realises that Liverpool wants to sign Fran Garcia, maybe they could ask for somewhere between €6m and €10m.

“What I know is that Betis in Spain are really, really interested.”

Fran Garcia’s relationship with Andoni Iraola

Garcia was given his big chance in senior football by Iraola and together they enjoyed promotion from Segunda in 2021.

Just before leaving Rayo Vallecano, Garcia spoke glowingly of his coach who was departing at the same time.

“[He is] my sporting father,” the player told Diario AS.

“I will always be grateful to him because he has been the person who has given me the opportunity to take the step into professional football.

“He gave me confidence, peace of mind.”

Given Liverpool’s need to strengthen in other areas of the pitch, the Reds surely won’t spend much on a left-back.

However, if Garcia is available on the cheap, he could be a good option to provide competition for Kerkez should Liverpool want to get Tsimikas off the books.
