Anthony Gordon's summer move to Barcelona could ultimately earn Newcastle millions, thanks to three clauses written into the deal.
While he has been central to one of the summer's most high-profile transfers, the Liverpudlian winger struggled to leave his mark for England against Ghana on Tuesday. Indeed, so far, he has appeared a shadow of the player that the Catalan team paid in excess of $90 million to sign. Liverpool was linked with Gordon before his switch to Barcelona.
Three Lions boss Thomas Tuchel chose to keep Gordon in his starting line-up for the clash with Ghana, despite him also falling short in England's 4-2 win over Croatia last week.
Gordon's pace, directness, and ability to drive down the byline were among the key reasons Barcelona opted to pursue him over Marcus Rashford, who had impressed on loan at the Spanish team last season.
Nevertheless, Gordon will need to raise his game to hold onto his place in England's team for Saturday's game against Panama.
The former Newcastle star has committed to a five-year deal in Spain, with the financial figures involved proving quite remarkable.

His contract runs until 2031, and he is understood to be earning around $400,000 per week.
Gordon, who joined Newcastle from Everton in 2023, set the club back £45 million ($69 million).
The transfer taking the winger to the Camp Nou will see 15 percent of the profit go to the Toffees.
The Magpies' trio of add-on clauses, meanwhile, means there's a real chance they could receive significantly more than the initial fee for Gordon in the future.
Here we look at the three clauses, which were inserted into the deal by the club's sporting director Ross Wilson, and precisely how much Newcastle stands to benefit from the transaction.

Appearance clause: Newcastle will receive €1 million ($1.1 million) per season if Gordon features in at least 60 percent of Barcelona's fixtures, something he's never had difficulty achieving during his time at St. James' Park. Should he remain fit and continue as a regular starter, Newcastle will maximize this at €5 million ($5.5 million) by the end of his contract.
Silverware clause: A further €5 million will be paid to Newcastle should Gordon assist Barcelona in winning trophies during his stint at the Camp Nou. This could prove advantageous for the Magpies, as Barcelona has won La Liga in the past two seasons.
Sell-on clause: Newcastle has also cleverly included a sell-on clause within the deal. While the exact percentage remains undisclosed, it will ensure that the North East club receives a share of any future transfer fee. This figure is typically calculated based on the profit from any sale, should Barcelona choose to offload Gordon before his contract expires.
