Former Manchester City goalkeeper eyed by Manchester United

Manchester United’s goalkeeping department is undergoing a significant rebuild ahead of the new season, with multiple changes expected across the squad.

The club are actively assessing experience and availability as they look to reshape their options behind their emerging first-choice goalkeeper.

United are also exploring the free-agent market as they weigh up experienced options for the season ahead.

One name now under consideration is Scotland international Angus Gunn.

According to The Sun, Angus Gunn has emerged as a Manchester United goalkeeping option after being released by Nottingham Forest, with the Scotland international currently representing his country at the World Cup.

The 28-year-old was released just days before Scotland’s opening tournament match, despite only joining Forest on a free transfer in August 2025 following his exit from Norwich City.

He has since started both of Scotland’s group fixtures, featuring in the win over Haiti and the defeat to Morocco, with a decisive clash against Brazil still to come.

Manchester United are continuing their goalkeeper evaluation process as they prepare for further changes in the position this summer.

Karl Darlow is also being considered, with the experienced shot-stopper set to become a free agent after an impressive spell at Leeds United, where he made 22 Premier League appearances during their successful survival campaign.

Darlow’s form has placed him firmly on United’s radar as they look to add reliable depth behind their main option.

Senne Lammens’ strong form has positioned him as the leading figure in United’s goalkeeping plans moving forward.

Tom Heaton has signed a new one-year deal to provide experience and stability within the group, while Andre Onana has been told he can leave and Altay Bayindir is expected to return to Turkey.

Angus Gunn was once on the books at Manchester City, but he never made a competitive first-team appearance for the club.

He joined City’s academy in 2011 from Norwich City and signed his first professional contract in 2013.

Although he was named on the first-team bench during the 2016–17 season, he never made a senior appearance before leaving on loan back to Norwich and later completing a £13.5 million permanent move to Southampton in 2018.

His journey has since taken him through several Premier League and international experiences, culminating in his current World Cup involvement with Scotland.

With United still finalising their goalkeeping structure, Angus Gunn remains one of several options being assessed as the club moves closer to defining its squad for the new season.
