Report: Berta adds former colleague to backroom team

According to Marca journalist Matteo Moretto, Andrea Berta has added Granada sporting director Javier Alonso to Arsenal’s technical team.

Alonso has been with the Spanish second-tier side since January 2024, having previously spent five years working alongside Berta at Atletico Madrid between 2016 and 2021 as an international scout.

Before that, he worked for Italian club Sassuolo after beginning his career coaching in the youth ranks of his hometown club, Sporting Gijon.

It’s not yet clear what Alonso’s remit at Arsenal will be, though he could well work under head of scouting Maurizio Micheli, who joined the club from Napoli at the turn of the year.

Transfermarkt currently lists 25 scouts on Arsenal’s books, part of a worldwide network tasked with identifying both emerging and established talent.

There has been significant turnover behind the scenes at the Emirates in recent years. James Ellis, who was promoted to technical director in the summer of 2025, left the club in February following a restructuring of the football leadership team.

Tim Lewis, Edu and Jason Ayto have also moved on in recent years.

The medical department is set for a refresh this summer, too. Arnaldo Abrantes is expected to arrive from Aston Villa as a replacement for the outgoing Dr Zafar Iqbal, while we also reported this week that rehabilitation specialist Eneko Angulo is joining from Real Betis.
