Tottenham Hotspur willing to pay more than Manchester United to sign Mateus Fernandes

Mateus Fernandes remains one of Manchester United’s priority midfield targets this summer.

However, the Red Devils could now be at risk of losing out to a Premier League rival.

Michael Carrick’s side are eager to strengthen in midfield ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.

Earlier this summer, we covered that Manchester United had already agreed personal terms with Fernandes, putting the club in a strong position in the race for the Portuguese midfielder.

However, recent developments suggest that advantage may now be slipping away.

According to The Times, Tottenham Hotspur are increasingly confident of beating Manchester United to Fernandes’ signature.

The report states that Spurs are prepared to pay up to £80 million for the 21-year-old and are willing to outspend United in order to secure a deal.

Tottenham growing in confidence over Fernandes dealt

Competition for Fernandes has intensified in recent weeks.

CentreDevils exclusively revealed earlier this week that Fernandes had agreed personal terms with Tottenham, with Spurs accelerating negotiations in an attempt to move ahead of their rivals.

That followed previous reports suggesting Manchester United had also reached an agreement on terms with the player.

West Ham are understood to value Fernandes at around £85 million.

CentreDevils recently covered reports indicating that the Hammers expected their asking price to be met amid growing interest from across Europe.

Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain have both been credited with interest, while Liverpool have also monitored the midfielder’s situation.

However, The Times claim Tottenham believe Manchester United could walk away from negotiations if West Ham refuse to lower their demands.

United are still expected to strengthen their midfield this summer.

United have already reached an agrement with Atalanta for Ederson, with the Brazilian viewed internally as Casemiro’s long-term replacement following the veteran’s departure.

Despite progress on the Ederson deal, United continue to admire Mateus Fernandes and have tracked him extensively over the past year.

Whether they are prepared to match Tottenham’s financial commitment remains to be seen.

For now, Spurs appear increasingly confident of winning the race for one of the Premier League’s brightest young midfielders.
