Former scout claims Marcus Rashford would join Tottenham only for ‘this’ reason

Marcus Rashford has been linked to Tottenham for quite a while.

Marcus Rashford would only consider a move to Tottenham Hotspur for financial reasons, with former Spurs scout Bryan King believing the England international has significantly more attractive options available to him this summer, including Champions League football that north London cannot currently offer.

Rashford’s situation has developed rapidly in recent weeks. After spending last season on loan at Barcelona, the Catalan club opted against activating a permanent deal, leaving the 28-year-old’s future uncertain despite an impressive spell at the Nou Camp. With no long-term future at Manchester United either, where he is understood to be earning in excess of £325,000 per week, the forward is one of the more high-profile names available on the market heading into the summer.

Tottenham have been linked with a £40 million move for Rashford, but King was candid about the fundamental obstacles facing any potential deal when speaking exclusively to Tottenham News. King said (h/t Tottenham News):

“I think he would be a better signing than what they’ve got. If he goes back to Barcelona he gets Champions League and the same with Manchester United. If he wants to get out of Man United, I’m surprised Barcelona haven’t signed him permanently. The only reason he would go to Tottenham at this stage is for the money.”

The assessment is a pointed one. Tottenham, fresh from a relegation battle and without European football next season, are not in a position to offer the kind of sporting prestige that Champions League clubs can dangle in front of a player of Rashford’s calibre. The Lewis family’s newfound financial willingness to break salary structures represents the one area where Spurs could theoretically compete, but matching or exceeding a wage of £325,000 per week would represent an extraordinary commitment for a player entering the final years of his peak.

Simons and Romero are highest earners at Tottenham

For context, Tottenham’s current highest earners, Xavi Simons and Cristian Romero, are understood to be on approximately £195,000 per week, meaning Rashford would arrive commanding wages that dwarf the club’s existing salary ceiling by a considerable margin.

King’s broader point, that Tottenham are not yet in a position where elite players choose them on footballing grounds alone, is an uncomfortable but honest reflection of where the club stands heading into the new season. Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi and Jan Paul van Hecke have already arrived, and the pursuit of Tonali, Savinho, and others continues, but rebuilding the sporting credibility needed to attract players like Rashford without simply outbidding everyone else remains a work in progress.
