The unsung hero of Jürgen Klopp’s 2021 defensive rescue mission says an emotional goodbye to ‘legends’ after 16 years ahead of a sudden American trial.
A lifelong Red prepares for a fresh start
From an eager nine-year-old walking through the gates of the Kirkby Academy to a 25-year-old professional moving on to pastures new, Rhys Williams is officially closing the book on his Liverpool career. With his contract set to expire at the end of June, the towering centre half is already plotting his next move.
The Athletic Liverpool correspondent James Pearce reports: “I can confirm that Williams is currently in the United States on trial with Major League Soccer outfit New York Red Bulls. It represents a fantastic opportunity for the defender to impress across the Atlantic as he searches for a permanent home and a fresh challenge this summer.”
Stepping up when it mattered most
Williams journey through the ranks on Merseyside was defined by perseverance and one unforgettable, high-stakes campaign. After tasting success as part of the FA Youth Cup-winning squad in 2019, his first team breakthrough arrived under former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp in September 2020, debuting in a 7-2 Carabao Cup victory at Lincoln City.
However, it was later that campaign when the ultimate test arrived. As a catastrophic injury crisis and Champions League qualification was on the line and the central defensive options were every supporter nightmare sidelining captain Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, and legend Joel Matip.
Williams was thrust into the deep end. Alongside Nat Phillips, he showed immense character, registering 18 more matches during the 2020-21 season. His contributions during that challenging period were vital in helping the Reds pull off the unthinkable which many to this day remember. As late surge to clinch Champions League qualification with a third-placed Premier League finish was a fitting ending to a season of turbulence.
Market movement and a changing guard
This latest exit comes during a period of significant transition behind the scenes. With several senior departures already confirmed including high-profile exits like Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson, and Ibrahima Konate and the squad is undergoing a substantial summer reshape after the sacking of Arne Slot as well as appointing new head coach Andoni Iraola who has a tough task ahead
Work remains ongoing in the transfer market to offset these outgoings. The club recently turned heads by hijacking Newcastle United’s move for former Osasuna forward Victor Munoz in a swift £35 million deal.
Meanwhile, recruitment staff are stepping up their pursuit of Ivory Coast forward Yan Diomande as they look to add further quality from the Bundesliga.
Live4Liverpool Verdict
We will always hold a special appreciation for Rhys Williams. It is easy to forget just how bleak things looked during that injury ravaged 2020-21 season, and without Williams who know regarded as a cult hero stepping up under immense pressure, Liverpool might well have missed out on crucial Champions League football.
While his career ultimately required him to look elsewhere for regular minutes, graduating from the U10s to the first team is a tremendous achievement.
A move to the MLS with the New York Red Bulls feels like the perfect environment for him to rebuild, find consistency, and truly kickstart his career as a 25-year-old man.
