Jurgen Klopp left Liverpool at the end of the 2023–24 season and has not coached since, having taken up a role as Head of Global Football with Red Bull.
He was appointed Liverpool manager in October 2015, with his contract originally due to run until 2026. In January 2024, Klopp made a surprise announcement that he would step down at the end of the season, citing that he was “running out of energy”.
During his time at Anfield, Klopp won the UEFA Champions League in 2019 and guided Liverpool to their first league title in 30 years in the 2019–20 season.
He also lifted the FA Cup, two League Cups, the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup. The former Liverpool boss has recently been asked again about a possible return to coaching, with the German currently working in media duties while at the World Cup in the United States.
Klopp said: “Yeah, yeah, I do it (coaching) every day actually, to myself in the morning. ‘Get up!’ and these kinds of things… We will see. Who knows?”
Klopp was previously linked with a return to management at Real Madrid this summer, but the Spanish club have since appointed Jose Mourinho. The German denied any talks with Madrid, though he has not ruled out a future return to coaching.
The 59-year-old said: “If Real Madrid had phoned, we would have heard about it by now. But that’s all nonsense. They haven’t called even once, not once. My agent is there, you can ask him. They haven’t called him either.
“Right now I’m not thinking about that, luckily there’s no reason to. For my age I’m quite advanced in life, but as a coach I’m not completely finished. I haven’t reached retirement age. Who knows what will happen in the coming years? But there’s nothing planned.”
Jurgen Klopp previously managed Mainz 05 and Borussia Dortmund, where he won back-to-back Bundesliga titles in 2011 and 2012.
Virgil van Dijk recently met Jurgen Klopp while away at the World Cup with the Netherlands. The Liverpool captain took a selfie with his former manager, who is working as an analyst for German television at the tournament.
Van Dijk made 270 appearances under Klopp after joining from Southampton in January 2018. Klopp posted the photo of the two on his official Instagram account with the caption ‘Look who I met’.
