Thomas Tuchel has admitted England “desperately” need Bukayo Saka at the World Cup, although the Three Lions boss insists the Arsenal winger cannot be expected to solve every attacking problem on his own.
Saka has been carefully managed since returning from a long-term Achilles issue and has featured as a substitute in both of England’s opening Group L matches.
The 24-year-old made an immediate impact against Croatia by setting up Marcus Rashford’s goal before coming off the bench again during Tuesday’s frustrating 0-0 draw with Ghana.
England failed to find a breakthrough in Boston despite dominating large spells of the contest, leaving them level on four points with Ghana at the top of the group.
Tuchel believes Saka is getting closer to full fitness and suggested the Arsenal forward could be ready for a starting role against Panama in England’s final group fixture.
“He seems to be more and more ready and will hopefully push,” Tuchel said. “We will then see.”
Despite welcoming Saka’s continued progress, the England head coach stressed he does not want to place unrealistic expectations on one of his most influential players.
“It’s not like Bukayo comes back and everything is solved and I don’t want to put this on his back,” Tuchel added. “We need him desperately, like every other player, in top shape.”
Saka has been eased back into action throughout the tournament after England’s medical staff opted against rushing him into the starting XI following his recovery programme.
The Arsenal winger has remained a key part of Tuchel’s plans despite the cautious approach, with the German previously acknowledging that managing his workload could prove vital over the course of the competition.
England’s inability to convert chances against Ghana has increased the spotlight on Saka’s possible return to the starting line-up.
Victory over Panama would secure qualification for the knockout rounds, although England’s position at the top of the group could ultimately be determined by goal difference after the stalemate with Ghana.
Tuchel also admitted the draw may affect his plans to rotate heavily for the final group game.
The England manager said he still expects to make changes but suggested they may be more limited than originally planned.
If Saka’s recovery progresses as expected, the Arsenal star could be in line to make his first start of the tournament when England face Panama this weekend.
