Manchester United’s surprise link with Angus Gunn looks less like a random free-agent punt and more like a clear admission about the shape of Michael Carrick’s goalkeeper department.
According to The Sun, United are considering Gunn after his Nottingham Forest release, while also tracking Leeds United veteran Karl Darlow as an experienced back-up option. The report adds that Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir are expected to leave, with Senne Lammens established as the club’s No.1.
That is the key point. This is not a search for a star goalkeeper.
It is a search for a functional squad piece who can protect the hierarchy rather than challenge it.

Why The Back-Up Profile Matters
Gunn is 30, has international tournament experience with Scotland and would arrive without the pressure of a major transfer fee. Darlow, 35, offers a similar logic: senior, homegrown, affordable and unlikely to demand the No.1 shirt.
For United, that profile matters because Lammens’ first full campaign as undisputed starter will be played under heavier conditions. Champions League football changes the calculation.

His one Forest appearance last season limits the excitement, but United are not shopping for excitement in this role.
The smarter read is that United want predictability.
If Lammens is the long-term bet, the back-up must be comfortable with a defined status, technically secure enough to support training standards and experienced enough not to turn every rotation decision into a headline.
That is where Gunn and Darlow differ from a younger project such as Radek Vitek.
Vitek may have the higher ceiling, but a developing goalkeeper needs minutes. Keeping him as a passive reserve would risk stalling the very progress United should be protecting.
United’s Goalkeeper Reset Is Becoming More Ruthless
The wider message is that Carrick’s United are trying to strip emotion out of the position. Lammens is the starter, Onana is a sale candidate and Bayindir appears expendable.
