Andy Robertson made his ninth start at a major tournament for Scotland on Wednesday night in a 3-0 loss to Brazil. In each of those previous appearances, he lasted at least 89 minutes, only yanked in a 1-0 defeat to Hungary at the 2024 Euros when the Tartan Army were searching for a late goal.

Robertson, 32 and now officially a Tottenham player, was far from his best while marking Brazilian winger Rayan in a difficult first half. His poor clearance in first half injury time led directly to Vinicius Jr's second for Brazil, effectively putting the game out of reach and Scotland's World Cup fate in jeopardy.

The Scotland captain was hooked at halftime in favor of Celtic left-back Kiernan Tierney. It was not reported whether Robertson suffered a first-half injury.

In the second half, Robertson was pictured on the Scotland bench with a large bag of ice strapped to his ankle. He seemed to be walking gingerly post-match as he greeted the Brazilian team, including Alisson, his longtime Liverpool teammate.

TalkSPORT reporter Shebahn Aherne, on location in Miami, confirmed Robertson's status. "Andy Robertson very cautiously and gingerly came back to the dugout to watch his team for the second half," she noted.

What happened on Vinicius's goal? Robertson stepped in front of a Bruno Guimaraes through ball meant for Rayan, who fell to the floor.

However, his ground clearance was intercepted by a sliding Matheus Cunha. The ball ended up back at the feet of Guimaraes, who lobbed a pass to the back post that found Vinicius unmarked.

Liverpool reunion

Robertson, now a Tottenham Hotspur player, wasn't the only ex-Red involved in the Scotland-Brazil contest. He was joined in his national team by Ben Gannon-Doak, a once-hyped Liverpool wonderkid before his sale to Bournemouth in 2025.

Brazil brought on Fabinho, Robertson's teammate from 2018 to 2023, to see out the 3-0 victory. The veteran midfielder currently plays for Saudi Arabian club Al-Ittihad.

Before the match, Robertson was asked whether he had given Scottish players any "advice" on how to score past Alisson, his Liverpool teammate from 2018 to 2026.

"I don’t think they’ll take any advice off me on how to beat Alisson," he told reporters. "I’ve trained with him for eight years, and I can count on one hand how many I’ve scored against him in training. I’ve certainly not cracked it yet."

"But when our strikers come to shoot, hopefully they can get the better of him."
