Former Manchester United stalwart Wes Brown has said a shock move to bring Trent Alexander-Arnold to Old Trafford cannot be ruled out. The former Liverpool right-back only ended his two-decade association with his boyhood club last summer, joining Real Madrid on a free transfer.
This move sparked a fierce backlash from sections of the Anfield faithful. The 27-year-old arrived in the Spanish capital amid huge fanfare, having won every major honour available during a glittering spell on Merseyside. But Alexander-Arnold's future at the Bernabeu is already the subject of speculation following a mixed start to life in Spain.
Alexander-Arnold started just 14 league matches last season, with his lack of regular football playing a role in his omission from Thomas Tuchel's squad for the ongoing World Cup in North America.
The departure of long-serving captain Dani Carvajal earlier this summer had seemingly paved the way for Alexander-Arnold to make the right-back starting slot his own.
However, the return of legendary manager Jose Mourinho and the anticipated arrival of Inter Milan wing-back Denzel Dumfries threaten to complicate matters, potentially pushing him further down the pecking order.

Any return to the Premier League with United would represent one of the most controversial transfers in modern English football given the fierce rivalry between the two clubs.
No player has transferred directly between Liverpool and United since Phil Chisnall swapped Old Trafford for Anfield in 1964, while striker Michael Owen remains the most recent player to have played in both shades of red. But club legend Brown, 46, believes United would be foolish not to consider a move if the opportunity ever presented itself.
"Manchester United would be a very good move for Trent Alexander-Arnold," Brown told Compare.bet, who offer the latest Betting Sites. "What a player. He would really help how Michael Carrick wants to attack teams.
"I think it is clear he is not really enjoying himself at Real Madrid. He would be a great player to have, and I think anyone in the Premier League would want to sign him. Who wouldn't have Trent in their team?"

Brown, who made 362 appearances for United across a trophy-laden 14-year spell at Old Trafford, admitted such a move would be unlikely – but pointed to some of football's most infamous transfers as evidence that nothing can ever be completely ruled out.
"I'm not sure he would be keen on United – Liverpool fans definitely wouldn't be happy!" he said. "But it's not out of the question. Luis Figo left Barcelona for Real Madrid. Michael Owen played for United. If he doesn't see his future at Real Madrid, we'll have to wait and see."
