Sheffield United 'in advanced talks' over loan deal for Manchester City man - report

Sheffield United are reportedly in advanced talks over a return for a Leeds United hero

Talks over a loan move back to Sheffield United for Manchester City’s Kalvin Phillips are said to have reached an advanced stage.

The 30-year-old was borrowed by the Blades in January, marking a return to Yorkshire for the former Leeds United star.

He made three appearances for Sheffield United before succumbing to injury, one that brought his campaign to an abrupt end.

Sheffield United ‘in advanced talks’

Reports have indicated Sheffield United want the midfielder back next season and progress on a deal appears to have been made.

According to Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke, Sheffield United are in advanced talks over another loan deal.

It has been suggested the Championship club are confident a deal can be done and that Phillips is happy to head back to Bramall Lane.

Posting on X, O’Rourke said: “Understand Sheffield United are in advanced talks to bring Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips back to the club on loan after he spent the second half of last season at the club. United are confident of the move with the player happy to rejoin.”

Kalvin Phillips’ career path

Phillips cut his teeth with his boyhood club Leeds and blossomed into a crucial figure for the Whites. He played a starring role in their Championship title triumph in 2020 before flourishing across two years in the Premier League with the Whites.

A £45m move to Manchester City in 2022 was the reward for his progress, but the switch pumped the brakes on his development.

He found opportunities limited and soon found himself out of the England fold after enjoying a stellar run with the Three Lions.

Loan spells at West Ham United and Ipswich Town failed to breathe life into his career, prompting a drop into the Championship with Sheffield United in January. Phillips will now be keen to remain injury-free and get his career back on track.

“And I just feel like staying idle, so many players have done it, where they've stayed at the club for so long and not played. And then their careers have fizzled out. I didn't want that to happen.

“I still feel like I've still got some life in me. I've still got some football in me to play, and I'm looking forward to the next three or four years.”
