Reece James has revealed that he is ‘devastated’ by the transfer moves Chelsea have been making in this summer transfer window.
Reece James disappointed with the sale of Cucurella
The Chelsea captain is representing England in the FIFA World Cup 2026. He was asked by talkSPORT about Chelsea’s sale of Marc Cucurella. And Reece James showed his disappointment in his team losing such a quality player.
“I spoke with him (Cucurella]) a few days ago. He’s obviously an amazing player – one of the best left-backs in the world. This is his football, you know, players move every few months, and I’m devastated to see him go, but I wish him all the best.”James said.
The statement displays obvious disappointment. The disappointment that Chelsea are letting one of the best left-backs in the world leave. Cucurella has made the move to Spanish giants Real Madrid for a £47.4m fixed fee with £4.3m worth of add-ons.
What does the Cucurella deal mean to Chelsea?
Marc Cucurella’s move to Real Madrid was one of the most surprising transfer twists. It was nearly a deal that no one saw coming. There wasn’t necessarily any month-long speculation or constant coverage. Out of nowhere, football transfer expert Fabrizio Romano announced the confirmation of the full-back’s transfer to Real Madrid. And the Chelsea faithful would’ve been gutted because Cucurella has been a key contributor for the Blues. However, Real Madrid and their new manager Jose Mourinho would be absolutely jubilant with the Spaniard’s arrival.
Cucurella notably won the UEFA Conference League in the 24/25 season and the Club World Cup in 2025. He also reached the FA Cup final in the 25/26 season. Losing the 27-year-old is going to be a massive loss for Chelsea moving forward.
Reece James’ phone call with Xabi Alonso after his appointment
Reece James in the same conversation with talkSPORT, also talked about newly appointed Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso.
“We’ve spoken a couple of times on the phone. I haven’t met him (Alonso) in person yet. Everyone I’ve spoken to about him says he’s an amazing, amazing manager.”
“It’s strange. I had it when I was younger with Frank Lampard. He was one of my idols growing up, and then when he stepped in as manager, it was a surreal moment. I’m delighted that Xabi Alonso is our manager,”James said.
It is definitely a great sign that the captain and the coach are already conversing. Fruitful conversations early on are always necessary for the club’s future and seamless tenure for the manager. Reece James will be determined to work hard next season along with Xabi Alonso for a more improved campaign. Because the last season for Chelsea was nothing short of a disaster. They miserably finished tenth in the Premier League with no silverware to show as well.
Author’s opinion
Reece James and his disappointment with Cucurella leaving Chelsea is obviously understandable. For a club looking to build after a rough season with a new manager, to lose one of their best players out of nowhere is definitely a setback.
However, Xabi Alonso will look to put that £50m earned from the sale of Cucurella to good use. At least a couple of established full-backs and a proper defensive reinforcement could push the Blues to a European finish in the coming season. With enough young legs in the squad already, the London club’s transfer policy should lean towards experienced players more than unproven foreign talents.
