Liverpool’s newest arrival has barely had time to settle into the headlines before fitness concerns began to follow him.
Victor Mumoz completed a €40 million move from Osasuna on June 18, but the early excitement around the transfer quickly gave way to concern after it emerged that the winger had been managing a calf issue before then suffering another muscle problem while following an individual recovery plan with Spain.
That has naturally left Liverpool supporters watching developments closely, especially with Muñoz still away on international duty at the World Cup.
There was a brief sign of encouragement when he was named on the bench for Spain’s 4-0 win over Saudi Arabia, although the latest picture suggests caution is still the priority as he continues his recovery rather than rushing back into action.
The most interesting update, though, has come from Spain boss Luis de la Fuente, who has attempted to calm the situation.
Spanish outlet Cadena SER had already reported the setback to Munoz’s recovery, while wider reports this week also carried Luis de la Fuente’s backing for the Liverpool winger:
“Victor has had a small muscular problem (edema) in another area, it’s not a relapse. He’s also experienced a lot of emotions and a lot of tension these last few weeks [Osasuna’s survival, injury, World Cup, Liverpool signing. ed] that may have stressed him out,” the Spain boss said.
“Now he needs calm and tranquility, and I’m sure we’ll see the Victor we know again. We’re working on it. Mark my words: Victor is going to be very important for us in this World Cup.”
For Spain, attention now turns to Saturday’s heavyweight Group H meeting with Uruguay, a match widely viewed as decisive in the battle to finish top of the section.
With Uruguay sitting just two points behind, a win against the reigning European champions is an upset the South American nation will be hoping for.
