Cody Gakpo’s Liverpool future looks far less certain than it did 12 months ago, with reports suggesting Tottenham are among the clubs watching his situation closely.
Fabrizio Romano already confirmed Spurs hold an interest, even if Liverpool have not yet given the green light for an exit.
After helping Liverpool in a much stronger 2024/25, Gakpo endured a difficult 2025/26 campaign, managing seven league goals and five assists in 36 appearances, which mirrored a broader drop-off across the squad.
Gakpo has looked like a completely different player for the Netherlands at the 2026 World Cup. He scored twice in a 5-1 win over Sweden.
Speaking after that game, the 27-year-old suggested the difference comes down to role and freedom, saying it is “a little bit different” with the national team because of “the freedom” he has there compared to club level.
Now a new BBC report has claimed that the Anfield club have a “conundrum” regarding Gakpo. It’s suggested this is the first time that the Dutch forward could potentially be sold, and that the signing of Victor Munoz also casts doubt.
Aadam Patel has also reported that Liverpool will look for north of £60m for suitors of Cody Gakpo this summer:
“For the first time since joining Liverpool in December 2022, there is the possibility of a move away, with a number of clubs including Tottenham Hotspur monitoring his situation.”
“Any transfer would likely to cost upwards of £60m – a big profit considering Gakpo cost an initial £35m when signing from PSV Eindhoven after the World Cup in 2022.”
For now, Liverpool still hold the cards. Gakpo is under contract until 2030, and his World Cup form is reminding everyone exactly why the Reds rated him so highly in the first place.
He was a big part of the title success in 2024/25, and hopefully that’s not forgotten too quickly on Merseyside this summer.
