Cody Gakpo minimum price tag emerges as he hints at wanting more “freedom”

A minimum fee that Liverpool would likely accept for Cody Gakpo has been shared by BBC Sport, and the winger has hinted at wanting more “freedom.”

Gakpo was one of the lightning rods for criticism this season as he scored nine and set up six goals in 52 appearances for Liverpool.

As a result, the Reds have strengthened on the left wing by bringing in Victor Munoz for £34.5 million to provide further competition alongside Rio Ngumoha.

Despite Liverpool’s squad being short of attacking depth, there is a feeling among fans that Gakpo is dispensable, especially at a good price.

Aadam Patel wrote for the BBC that “any transfer would likely cost upwards of £60m” for Gakpo.

This lines up with what reported Ben Jacobs has previously claimed, when he said that Anthony Gordon’s £70m Barcelona move “would inform their valuation.”

While Gakpo does appear to have a price, there is no suggestion that a move is imminent.

However, Patel did add that Tottenham are “monitoring his situation,” as had previously been reported elsewhere.

The 27-year-old’s contract doesn’t expire until 2030 and he is estimated to be earning between £160,000 and £200,000 per week.

Cody Gakpo hints at enjoying “the freedom” allowed by Ronald Koeman

Coming off the back of a disappointing campaign for Liverpool, Gakpo is enjoying a brighter period with the Netherlands.

For much of the season, the Dutchman was stuck to the left touchline, a long way from goal. However, he has got himself into scoring positions more often for his country.

Two goals in a friendly against Uzbekistan were followed by another two strikes and an assist in the Netherlands’ latest group game, an impressive 5-1 win over Sweden.

Asked about how his role compared from club to country, Gakpo responded: “A good question. Obviously it’s a little bit different.

“It’s different where the coach wants me to be, the freedom that I have.”

Journalist Patel explained that Gakpo then stopped himself before saying anything more – perhaps a hint that he wasn’t entirely pleased with how he was being used by Arne Slot.

Whether Liverpool sell the attacker or keeps him, what is guaranteed is that more competition should serve him well.

His best days as a Red came when he was rotating with Luis Diaz, offering different qualities to the Colombian on the left flank.
