Liverpool U21s Discover EFL Trophy Group Opponents

Liverpool Under-21s have officially discovered their opponents for the group stage of the upcoming 2026/27 EFL Trophy competition.

Following Thursday’s EFL trophy draw, Liverpool U21’s find themselves placed into Group H of the Northern Section, locking in some fascinating fixtures against experienced English Football League opposition.

The young Reds face a grueling schedule in the opening phase of the 2026/27 EFL Trophy they have been placed into Group H of the Northern Section, where they will encounter established Football League opposition in Huddersfield Town, Doncaster Rovers, and Rochdale.

As has become custom for the invited academy sides in this competition to ensure EFL clubs retain home advantage, while dates and kickoff times are yet to be finalised following the EFL’s fixture release day, matches are scheduled to commence in early September.

Make no mistake, this is a testing draw for Liverpool’s youngsters, but it offers a welcome shot at redemption after a thoroughly educational, yet ultimately disappointing, campaign in last season’s competition.

During the 2025/26 tournament, the young Reds found it incredibly difficult to assert themselves on the road against seasoned EFL opposition.

Placed in a group with Crewe Alexandra, Burton Albion, and Chesterfield, Rob Page side finished bottom of their group. They suffered comprehensive 2-0 defeats away at both Burton Albion and Crewe Alexandra, struggling with the physical demands of senior football.

However, their final group match showcased the character brewing within the academy. Facing Chesterfield away, the Reds battled to a thrilling 2-2 draw in normal time thanks to a stellar brace from Kaide Gordon, before showing nerves of steel to edge an astonishing penalty shootout 11-10.

That dramatic night in Chesterfield proved that these young players possess the technical quality and resilience to compete at this level. The assignment doesn’t get any easier this year against Huddersfield, Doncaster, and Rochdale, but the experience gained from last season’s triumphs and tribulations will be vital.

No doubt this is an unforgiving draw, but this is also exactly what the Academy needs because this is going to allow them to visit away grounds like the John Smith’s Stadium and the Eco-Power Stadium is precisely the kind of learning experience that bridges the gap between youth football and the senior game.

Last year’s group stage was a massive wake-up call, but that epic 11-10 penalty shootout win over Chesterfield showed what this group is capable of when they click. If the likes of the next generation of talent can handle the physical battle against League One and League Two sides, it will do their development a world of good.

Every single game will be broadcast live on Sky Sports this year under the new TV rights deal, meaning fans will be able to watch the next generation of superstars to see who is ready to step up to Andoni Iraola first-team plans as they could be valuable during the Emirates FA Cup and Carabao Cup fixtures during the 2026/27 campaign.
