Wolves are trying to sell a fresh start this summer after some fan concern in this off-season.
The men’s side were relegated from the Premier League after taking just 17 points from 33 matches, ending the club’s eight-year stay in the top flight, and supporter frustration has been visible for months, with anger directed at both the hierarchy and the coaching situation.
That unrest has carried into the summer.
Reports around Kieran Trippier suggested he was left stunned by Rob Edwards’ exit after the manager had helped persuade him to move to Molineux, although later updates indicated the defender had spoken with new boss Cesar Peixoto and was now content to continue with the move.
Meanwhile, Wolves Women are now operating as a fully professional team, which means the club has moved away from its previous part-time structure and is investing in players on full-time contracts.
Now the West Midlands club have officially announced the former Liverpool defender Jasmine Matthews as their first signing of the professional era, with the experienced centre-back joining on a two-year deal ahead of Wolves Women’s first season in WSL 2.
Matthews first joined the Reds in 2018, later returned in 2021, and became a dependable senior figure. She helped Liverpool win promotion from the Women’s Championship in 2022 during her second spell on Merseyside.
The 33-year-old has made more than 150 Women’s Super League appearances, played in the UEFA Women’s Champions League with Bristol City and Liverpool.
Wolves Women manager Dan McNamara said of the deal:
“After the very first game we played against Burnley last season, it was evident to us how much quality Jas possesses and she is someone we earmarked if we were to make the step up.”
“She has had an amazing career and we are delighted to bring her here. We know she still has a lot to give and will bring us that experience of knowing what the demands are of professional football. We want to add players that will enhance our environment, not just with their standards, but with their abilities as well.”
“Jas has got all the ingredients to be a real good leader in what will be a really exciting first season in WSL 2.”
