Newcastle United have issued a 'not for sale' stance on captain Bruno Guimaraes, according to sources close to the club.

The Brazil international put in a polished performance for his country with two assists against Scotland in a convincing 3-0 win and in the immediate aftermath, reports that Arsenal will approach Newcastle have emerged.

There is no doubt that there is interest in Bruno, and Arsenal have monitored his performances for a number of years, but, with the ex-Lyon man now 28, it remains to be seen whether they could produce a bid that would blow Newcastle out the water.

Arsenal sources also say that they have not firmed up interest in terms of an official enquiry and would need extra support to pull off a deal for a player entering his final few years at the top level. The Daily Mail claimed that the Gunners had held talks with the player's agent.

Newcastle are aware that the reports have unsettled their fanbase further, but their opening stance on Bruno is that he is 'not for sale'.

The Magpies have not received any official approach or had an offer for the player who had a £100m minimum fee release in 2024. But despite talk of Man City coming forward, Newcastle did not get a bid close to that for the midfielder.

Bruno set off for the World Cup with Brazil without signing a new contract with his current deal up in 2028 and no hint of a new one at this stage.

Speaking about Bruno's four years at the club earlier this year, head coach Eddie Howe said: “It's very difficult to sum it up quite quickly because "I think he has been an incredible signing.

"You never quite know. I'd never met Bruno before, so it was a big signing because we needed Bruno to come in and be the player that he has been, but you never quite know how the dynamic and the chemistry is going to work.

"From the day that he turned up in his suit, when he showed great respect for the moment in his career, I thought, 'He's a good person' and he's gone on to great things."

Bruno has not stayed quiet about Newcastle's slump from fifth to 12th place in the Premier League though. He said in March: "I think for next season, we are going to need more players to be honest with you, because I think the squad is a little bit short.

"We have seen it last year when we played in the Champions League, we lost some players for injury and then it was busy for us. I think we can improve our level because next year, our season will have one more competition.

“We need to work hard now, have an amazing holiday. We need to improve of course but we’re very, very happy.”
