Victor Munoz breaks silence on Newcastle United snub after £35m Liverpool hijack

Victor Munoz has broken his silence after picking Liverpool over Newcastle United.

Newcastle had representatives over in the United States last week to finalise a deal for the Spain international after agreeing terms with the player, his agent and Osasuna.

The Magpies were therefore left stunned when news broke that Munoz was off to Anfield instead. It’s understood club chiefs were aware of the Reds’ interest, but were told the 22-year-old wanted to move to St James’ Park.

Liverpool triggered Munoz’s £35million release clause, although that was described as “irrelevant” in Newcastle’s case since they had already agreed a fee at the slightly lower price. Ultimately, it came down to the player having a late change of heart.

And for the first time, Munoz has spoken publicly about his decision to move to Merseyside, revealing fellow Spaniard and newly-appointed Liverpool boss Andoni Iraola was a huge factor.

“It's an opportunity you can't pass up,” Munoz told Spanish publication Cadena SER. "He [Iraola] instilled confidence in me, showed me how his team plays... he played an important role in my decision. The transfer happened very quickly.

"I've been focused on the World Cup. I haven't wanted to hear much about my future unless it was something concrete."

Munoz completed his Liverpool medical whilst away with the Spain camp but less a couple of days later, the Spanish FA confirmed the former Real Madrid had sustained an injury and it is unclear when he will be available for any of their remaining World Cup matches.

"We were managing it (the injury), but I felt some discomfort, and we're trying to get back on the field as soon as possible,” Munoz added.

"These have been very difficult moments because this is my childhood dream, and seeing it all fall apart because of an injury is incredibly frustrating.

"My teammates have been a fundamental pillar in keeping me motivated every day. It's all I think about. It's a dream, and I want to be back on the field as soon as possible."
