Newcastle United mercenary Alexander Isak has commented on his fitness after an injury-ravaged campaign at Liverpool.
Alexander Isak has insisted he feels “very good” physically after an injury-ravaged debut campaign at Liverpool.
Newcastle United supporters had the last laugh after the Swede burned all of his bridges at St James’ Park. Isak - largely down to his antics to leave the Magpies - arrived on Merseyside unfit.
He struggled to get up to speed before breaking his leg against Tottenham Hotspur in December. Several minor muscle setbacks derailed his campaign further - with Isak netting just three Premier League goals in Liverpool colours.
‘I’m good now’ - Alexander Isak
Isak’s focus is now on going as far as he can with Sweden at the World Cup. Speaking to the press before their clash against Japan last night, the 26-year-old claimed to be in a good physical condition after a season of struggle.
"Club team and national team are two very separate things," Isak said. "When I joined the national team, I had absolutely no thoughts about anything other than Sweden and the World Cup.
"It's clear that it's nice to have a good World Cup, and you want to do it even better all the time. I feel like I'm in a good place now. And hopefully I can continue to do well.
"Now I feel good, very good. But it's hard to put your finger on what your maximum is, you never know. But I have nothing to complain about right now when it comes to my physical status."
Alexander Isak on Viktor Gyokeres
The former Toon striker also recognises that his relationship with Arsenal striker Viktor Gyokeres is key. Isak added: "It (the strike partnership) has felt good. It's worked well in the matches. It's clear that you're a bit more of a playmaker, playing others forward instead of being the one making the deep runs yourself.
“But I'm enjoying it there. We are two talented players who want the best for the team. We get along really well, just like the whole team."
