Sporting director Andrea Berta is keen on a move for the 28-year-old ahead of next season.

Real Madrid have previously shown an interest in Guimaraes but are currently prioritising a move for Chelsea's Enzo Fernandez.

talkSPORT's chief football correspondent Alex Crook provided an update on Guimaraes' future on The Window.

Crook explained: "Arsenal and their sporting director Andrea Berta are showing interest in Guimaraes.

"I don’t think this has gone as far as club-to-club talks yet, but there is a concern at Newcastle that Guimaraes will push for this move and there could be a bit of a mass exodus from St. James’ Park.

"Anthony Gordon has already joined Barcelona in a deal worth £70million. We know Tottenham are pressing on with their interest in Sandro Tonali. They’ve had one offer rejected.

"They are preparing a second bid and my understanding is that Tonali has made it clear he wants to make that move away from Newcastle and to North London despite some interest from the likes of Manchester United and clubs in his native Italy as well.

"This would be a big statement signing for Tottenham as Roberto De Zerbi looks to pilot their way away from being relegation contenders in the last couple of seasons to challenging for those European places once again."

Tottenham Hotspur remain in talks with Newcastle over a deal for Tonali after seeing a bid worth between £75million and £80million rejected.

The Magpies are understood to value the midfielder at more than £100million.

As for Guimaraes, the Brazil international has two years remaining on his current deal.

He made 41 appearances across all competitions for Newcastle last season.

Across those outings, Guimaraes scored nine goals and added eight assists.

However, his performances were not enough to secure European football for Eddie Howe's side.

Newcastle finished the campaign in 12th, four points adrift of the top eight.

Guimaraes warned over Arsenal move

Arsenal fan Darren Bent believes Guimaraes will have to settle for being a squad player next season if he joins the Gunners.

The former striker has claimed the midfielder does not walk into Mikel Arteta's side.

Instead, Manchester United are the only 'top side' where he would walk into the starting XI.

Speaking on Breakfast, the talkSPORT co-host admitted: "If he wants to obviously play in the Champions League and the chance to win trophies then he’s going to have to (agree to being a squad player).

"He doesn’t walk into any top side and start straight away. Man United he actually would.

"Arsenal just won the Premier League, but I think for Bruno, that’s not the priority for me.

"Left wing is the one I’d go for first and then if there’s a little spare change then you start strengthening."
