For the past few weeks, Liverpool supporters have had one eye firmly fixed on the World Cup, tracking the every move of RB Leipzig’s teenage sensation Yan Diomandé.
The 19-year-old winger has been heavily linked with a summer switch to Anfield, with new sporting director Richard Hughes locked in negotiations over a mega-money deal. And on Thursday evening in Philadelphia, Diomandé gave the Reds the ultimate justification to loosen the purse strings.
If those inside the corridors of power at Anfield needed any further justification for their summer transfer plans, they received it in spades on Thursday evening.
As the World Cup regular season heat intensifies across the Atlantic, the eyes of the Liverpool fanbase have remained firmly fixed on one man Yan Diomande.
In Philadelphia, the 19-year-old winger gave a compelling demonstration of exactly why Richard Hughes and his recruitment team are ready to test RB Leipzig’s resolve in the coming weeks.
Having suffered a rare off-night in his previous outing against Germany, the Ivorian sensation responded in the manner of a player destined for the absolute top. Lining up on the left flank for the second successive game for the Ivory Coast 2-0 win against Curacao, Diomande needed just seven minutes to leave his indelible mark on the tournament.
A perfectly weighted, defence splitting pass teed up former Arsenal man Nicolas Pepe for the game’s opening goal in a comfortable 2-0 win.

In doing so, at 19 years and 223 days old, Diomande officially etched his name into the history books as the youngest player ever to register a direct goal contribution for the Elephants at a World Cup.

But it is the sheer underlying data of his performances in the United States that will have those of a red persuasion salivating.
For a Liverpool side that has occasionally lacked that unpredictable, direct, line-breaking profile from its wide players after selling the likes of Luis Diaz, Sadie Mane and now Mohamed Salah leaving in recent times, Diomande looks like the ultimate winger to bring that back.
Inevitably, such performances bring an unwanted side effect for prospective buyers: the price tag.
Leipzig are tough negotiators as Liverpool know well from previous dealings for Naby Keita and Dominik Szoboszlai. The Bundesliga outfit are currently holding out for a big of £110m with Paris Saint-Germain are also lurking.
Journalist speaking to the Anfield Index, provided a encouraging update on Thursday, suggesting that Diomande is “really keen” to secure his dream move to Merseyside.
“I do think that it will happen, it’s just a case of being patient, 30 million Euros is a big gap but I think there are ways it can be met in the middle to suit both parties. I’d be very surprised if it doesn’t end up with Diomande signing for Liverpool.” He said
With a round-of-16 clash locked in for June 30 against either France or Norway, Diomande’s global audition is nowhere near finished.
Leipzig’s hierarchy may be rubbing their hands together at his skyrocketing market value, but the noise out of the player’s camp offer significant encouragement.
