Tottenham Hotspur are still “working on a deal to sign” Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano said that only Spurs are currently in talks for the Italian international:

“Tottenham are working on the deal to sign Sandro Tonali, and that remains the case. Deal on Tottenham – Tonali. I’m not coming here mentioning Man City. I’m not coming here mentioning other clubs.”

“Since I told you Tonali [to] Tottenham last week, the other clubs are no longer mentioned, by myself at least. So let’s follow the situation, but the deal is on.”

Newcastle United are sticking to their valuation

There is thought to be an acceptance at St James’ Park that Tonali will leave this summer, but that will only happen if his asking price is met.

Tottenham’s initial offer was reportedly worth between £75m and £80m, which is substantially below the £100m total package the Magpies are holding out for.

Tonali’s other suitors are prioritising different targets

Manchester City are still expected to secure the signature of Elliot Anderson. With that deal set to cost upwards of £130m, it would be a surprise if they had the funds to pay £100m for Tonali as well.

Arsenal, meanwhile, appear to be interested in slightly cheaper midfield targets. They have been looking at Lille’s Ayyoub Bouaddi, Bournemouth’s Alex Scott and Roma’s Manu Kone.

It should be pointed out too that Spurs themselves are looking at alternatives for Tonali. They have reportedly held conversations with West Ham about signing Mateus Fernandes, who is valued at £80m by the Hammers.
