Rio Ngumoha to be offered new Liverpool contract

Rio Ngumoha is set to be offered a new Liverpool contract later this year, after Bayern Munich made an attempt to sign him this summer.

Earlier this month it was asserted that Bayern Munich had identified the 17-year-old as their priority left-wing target, with Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg later revealing that weeks of talks had even produced a verbal agreement with the player’s camp.

Liverpool, however, shut the door firmly and immediately, making it clear to Vincent Kompany’s side that Ngumoha was not for sale at any price – and that was the end of it.

The teenager etched his name into Liverpool history in August when he climbed off the bench at St James’ Park and fired home a dramatic 100th-minute winner against Newcastle United, becoming the club’s youngest-ever goalscorer in the process.

He went on to make several more cameo appearances and important contributions over the course of the campaign, including netting his first Anfield goal in a 2-0 victory over Fulham.

In total, the winger featured 29 times for Liverpool during the 2025/26 season.

Now it seems the Anfield club are wanting to make sure that suitors know he is completely off the market:

James Pearce of the Athletic has reported that the Anfield club will look to tie him down on fresh terms when he turns 18 in August:

“Ngumoha is going nowhere, with Liverpool keen to get him tied down to a longer contract once he turns 18 in late August. They see him having a bigger role next season under new head coach Andoni Iraola.”

“The plan is to have four high-quality wide options, so Iraola is able to rotate and not overburden players physically.”

“Liverpool never received an official approach from Bayern and, if Ngumoha was feeling remotely unsettled, then that hadn’t been articulated to the club.”

It was also reported that RB Leipzig made an enquiry for Ngumoha, so it’s clear that Liverpool are being wise to tie the teenager down to a new deal as soon as possible.
