Newcastle United have turned down an offer worth less than £60million for Bruno Guimaraes.
Newcastle United have reportedly rejected an opening Arsenal bid for Bruno Guimaraes.
News broke last night that the Gunners were expressing interest in the Toon skipper. It is understood that Newcastle have no intention of selling Guimaraes - viewed as indispensable at St James’ Park.
The 28-year-old is currently on World Cup duty with Brazil and produced two assists in a masterclass performance to all but dump Scotland from the tournament. Less than 24 hours later, the Arsenal interest emerged, with defender Gabriel and wideman Gabriel Martinelli also in the Brazil setup.
Newcastle United reject bid
The Athletic now claim Newcastle have turned down a bid for their captain. David Ornstein reports that the offer was less than £60million - and immediately rebuffed by the Magpies.
As mentioned, Newcastle will not entertain any offers for Guimaraes this summer. He has two years remaining on his contract and a drastic extension would put to bed any speculation.
Guimaraes is already the club’s highest earner - raking in a reported £160,000 per week. However, that is considerably less than the wages Arsenal - or any traditional “big six club” - could put on the table.
Sandro Tonali to Spurs?
As for Sandro Tonali, he is another player on Arsenal’s radar. His agent, Beppe Riso, called a move to the Emirates or Manchester City “very likely” earlier this year.
However, Tottenham Hotspur have seen two approaches worth £75million rejected. He is someone Newcastle could sell - but only at a price closer to the £100million mark.
Roberto De Zerbi views Tonali as the ideal signing in the engine room as part of his summer rebuild. Intense transfer talk surrounding the Italian and Guimaraes is an unwanted distraction as the Magpies try to kick-start their own revamp at St James’ Park.
