Liverpool look set to miss out on a potential financial boost as Harry Wilson edges closer to a move to Leeds United.

The winger came through the ranks at Anfield before joining Fulham in 2021.

He made two first-team appearances under Jurgen Klopp for the Reds, but largely struggled to nail down a regular place.

The Wales international subsequently joined Fulham on an initial loan arrangement before completing a permanent £12million transfer to Craven Cottage.

During his spell with the west London club, the 29-year-old accumulated 187 appearances for Marco Silva's side.

He recently enjoyed the finest campaign of his career to date, netting 10 Premier League goals and contributing seven assists, prompting calls for a return to the club where he began his footballing journey.

As part of the £12m agreement that took him away from Anfield, Liverpool secured a 15 per cent sell-on clause. However, the Reds will no longer benefit from Wilson's next transfer as he is poised to depart Fulham upon the expiry of his contract.

The Athletic has reported that Leeds have struck an agreement to bring Wilson in, with the player set to join Daniel Farke's squad on a free transfer.

The midfielder is expected to put pen to paper on a long-term contract and will receive an enhanced wage package at Elland Road, reports the Liverpool Echo.

A number of Premier League clubs had been linked with Wilson before he chose Leeds as his preferred destination. Fulham had made efforts to extend his deal, which would have enabled Liverpool to still profit from any future transfer.

Transfermarkt values Wilson at £21.55m following his impressive campaign. Had Fulham been able to secure that fee while Wilson remained under contract, Liverpool would have pocketed £3.23m.

The Reds' chances of the sell-on clause being activated were dealt a blow last summer. Leeds had been keen on signing Wilson 12 months ago, but a potential transfer fell through on deadline day.

LeedsLive reported that the Yorkshire club had matched Fulham's undisclosed asking price for the winger, with Wilson also agreeing to join the newly-promoted side. Nevertheless, Fulham pulled out of the deal in the dying moments of the transfer window.

While Liverpool were left to lament their lost windfall, Wilson managed to put any transfer frustration behind him, producing a standout season for Fulham throughout the campaign. He is expected to join Leeds when his Fulham contract expires later this month and could be accompanied by former Liverpool target Julian Brandt, who has also been linked with a switch to Elland Road.
