Yan Diomande continues to attract attention amid growing transfer links with Liverpool, but the young winger has been described as “not the finished article”.

Diomande has emerged as one of the breakout stars of the World Cup, but any potential move to Liverpool would be the result of long-term scouting rather than a knee-jerk decision.

The Reds have been in clear need of greater pace and attacking quality in wide areas ahead of next season, with recruitment already underway following the arrival of Spanish winger Victor Munoz as the first signing of the Andoni Iraola era. Liverpool has reportedly informed RB Leipzig of its willingness to meet a package worth around $115 million (£86 million/€100 million) for the 19-year-old, who has impressed in his debut season in Germany.

However, reports in Germany suggest Leipzig is holding firm on a valuation closer to $148 million (£112 milion), a significant figure for a player with just one season of senior football at the club.

Former Manchester United midfielder Alan Smith believes Liverpool should be cautious in its approach for the Ivory Coast international. "I mean, as for the price, I don’t know what Liverpool are prepared to pay, what they’ll end up paying if they do buy him. But he’s young, he’s not the finished article" Smith told BestBettingSites.co.uk.

"I think Liverpool would probably judge him more on his Leipzig form last season than these internationals. So they would probably already have made up their mind if they want him or not. But he’s an exciting player. So I don’t think that one performance would put them off."

Diomande enjoyed an impressive debut campaign in the Bundesliga, registering 13 goals and 10 assists in all competitions after joining from Leganes last summer.

Diomande has also underlined his talent at this summer’s World Cup, delivering a series of impressive performances for Ivory Coast. He was a standout against Ecuador on matchday one before later creating his side’s goal against Germany, using his pace and directness to beat Joshua Kimmich in the build-up.

The Liverpool target also played a key role early in the match against Curacao, initially appearing to be crowded out by two defenders before reacting quickly to regain possession inside the box.

He then showed composure to square the ball for former Arsenal forward Nicolas Pepe, who finished first time. That assist also carried historical significance, with Diomande becoming the first African teenager to register a World Cup assist since 1994.

The two clubs most strongly linked with a move for Diomande are Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain. Liverpool is understood to be prioritizing greater quality and depth in wide attacking areas, while PSG’s interest is being driven by ongoing uncertainty over Bradley Barcola’s future.
