Arsenal face a major setback in their quest to sign Manchester City winger and highly rated youngster Savinho.
Savinho and his career at Manchester City so far
Savinho made the move to Manchester City from French club Troyes through a deal that was worth £30.8 million. The Brazilian winger arrived at Manchester in July 2024, as Man City were undergoing a transition period under manager Pep Guardiola. Savinho’s initial days were excitingly successful. His first full season, which was the 24/25 season, was a decent success for the 22-year-old. He played close to 50 games in that season in which he scored 2 goals and managed an impressive 10 assists.
Savinho’s Manchester City career stats, as per FOTMOB:
COMPETITION APPEARANCES GOALS ASSISTS
PREMIER LEAGUE 53 2 9
CHAMPIONS LEAGUE 16 1 2
FA CUP 7 1 0
EFL CUP 4 2 1
The Brazilian is an absolute treat to the eyes for anyone who loves football. Because he possesses electric pace and lethal dribbling skills, giving him the ability to glide with the ball. Savinho is also an extremely creative footballer. He does not limit himself to dribbling past defenders. He creates chances and runs into dangerous areas. That is exactly why Premier League champions Arsenal want him in their attack.
What are Arsenal’s chances of signing Savinho?
Arsenal’s pursuit of Savinho began when they realized the fact that Gabriel Martinelli is not the same player he was a couple of seasons back. Especially in the latest season, Martinelli could barely contribute goals. That is unacceptable if you are playing for the Premier League Champions. And this situation pushed Arsenal and Arteta to contact Man City for Savinho. The only problem, and a major problem is that as reported by GIVEMESPORT, Arsenal want a loan deal and Man City want the deal to be a permanent one.
Moreover, a massive club like Manchester City wouldn’t want to strengthen a title rival in Arsenal. Especially after they lost the title race to the North London club last season. So for now, Savinho to Arsenal remains a stalled transfer as City are clear in their stance of only involving in a permanent move for the Brazilian. Interestingly, Tottenham Hotspur are strong favorites to sign the 22-year-old on a permanent transfer.
What are the other available options for Arsenal?
Now this is not necessarily an emergency situation where Arsenal must make an attacking signing compulsorily. After all, they are the Premier League champions. They should be the last English side to feel the compulsive need to make signings. However, the most criticized aspect of Arsenal and Arteta’s football last season was their toothless attack. On most matches football pundits felt Arsenal won in an ‘ugly’ manner with the attack barely showing intent. That is one thing the Gunners would like to change in the coming season.
Savinho is not the only attacking signing Arsenal are pursuing this transfer window. As reported by The Guardian, they are also actively involved in the race to sign Aston Villa attacking midfielder Morgan Rogers. Especially after the failed attempt to bring in Savinho on loan, the Gunners have made the 23-year-old their top transfer target. Arsenal are not the only club pursuing the Englishman. The likes of Chelsea, Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain are also interested in him. However, Rogers is leaning towards the Premier League champions.
Author’s opinion
Honestly, Savinho at Arsenal would’ve been box-office. As mentioned earlier, last season was disappointing for Arsenal from an attacking point of view, despite them winning the title. And Savinho would’ve done wonders to that Arsenal attack. It is a shame that the deal did not materialize.
